The menstrual cycle

Later I will go over this cycle, but for now I wanted to share a model answer to D-A* question about the menstrual cycle.

Explain how the four hormones, Oestrogen, Progesterone, LH and FSH control the menstrual cycle

TIPS:

For this question you have to explain each hormones role in the menstrual cycle. Although it sounds tricky, it is quite straightforward.

The good thing about these questions is that you don't need long- winded answers, just short concise points explained.

Remember you have 6 minutes for a question like this. If you have revised it should take you no more than five.

MODEL ANSWER:

FSH, made in the pituitary gland, causes the oocytes to develop in the follicles and stimulates oestrogen production. Oestrogen build up the lining of the uterus. Progesterone is produced by corpus luteum and high levels of progesterone stop menstruation from happening. Menstruation occurs when there is a drop in levels of oestrogen and progesterone.

Compared with the previous six mark question on ADH, this is a quarter of the size. In this question the examiners want you to recall information, rather than a process in particular. I would suggest that if you are stuck on the hormones involved in the menstrual cycle, learn this model answer by heart. The positives of this question are:
