Due to the increase in human population, we need more food. The World Health organisation calls this the 'global food security crisis'.
New varieties of crops with high yields are being produced to provide more food.Pest management strategies
Less pests = More crop for people to eat.
Ways of decreasing crop damage:
1) Farmers spray insecticide on their crop to kill insect pests. This means less crop will be damaged.
2)Some plants genetically modified to produce Bt toxins, which kill the pests which feed on them.
3)Crop rotation ( growing different crops each year) can stop pests affecting the field.
4) Biological control, meaning that living organisms are used to control a pest. For example ladybirds kill aphids (known pests that eat vegetables) to keep aphid numbers down.
