Chapter 11 : Love and lies
Rain drown out the silent screams of the lonely. Dark black clouds surrounded the sun. Deer huddle in their dens. Squirrels scattered to the warmth of trees. All creatures hiding from the dark of the day. All at rest with the world on this Sunday morning in Washington . But there will be no rest for a girl and ghosts.
"Wake up!" Adam said ,nudging Rachel's shoulder . "You have to wake up !"
"What?" Rachel mumbled, burying her self under the pillows .
"I went to show you something !" He exclaimed. "Just wake up already!"
"Fine," Rachel rolls out of bed , grabs a t-shirt , shorts , and walks to the bathroom. She changes quickly then follows Adam out her room. She could hear her fathers snores as she passed his bedroom .
"So where are we going ?" She asked .
"To the house ," Adam replied . Rachel nods and as quick as the lightening in the sky was off running.
Thump. Thump Thump. Rachel's heart pounded in her chest. She huffed and puffed . "What took you so long?" Adam laughed .
"Sorry, But unlike you, I can't make myself disappear and appear," she huffed.
"Come on, " He ushered Rachel toward the backyard.
"What on earth did you drag me out to see?" She asked, rounding the corner of a the house.
Yellow brown grass scattered around patches of dark brown mud. Trees rotted with termites and dry rot. Their branches twisted , some hung as if clinging to the trunk for life, faces mangled on the trunks watching Rachel as she moves through the muddy backyard.
"Are you sure this is safe?" Rachel asked , glance back a the trees that seemed to stare back. She wasn't easily scared but something about those trees made we uneasy.
"Yeah, come on, any minutes now," Adam said. He takes a seat on a rusted bench in the middle of the yard. She does the same.
"What are we doing? It pouring!" Rachel said. She shivered through her soaked clothes. Why the hell didn't I bring my jacket? She asked herself.
"Just watch the sky!" Adam said excitedly. For the first time Rachel could see a smile on his face. Why was he so happy now . Could it be the house ? Or was it just some mood swing? She had no clue but she liked it . She hoped it wouldn't change.
She watched the sky. Rain drops raced across her face , dipping to the earth, then disappear as if they were just phantoms , here then gone . Rachel blinked , and squinted through the grey nothingness of the sky .
Suddenly , before Rachel could decided to get up and leave. The sun had escaped the darkness of the clouds and made a clear of light. Two brilliant rainbows , both closely together that if by a glance could me mistake a one . The beautiful colors sparkled from the sky.
"Beautiful isn't it?" Adam asked. The rainbows glisten on his eyes. Rachel nods speechless, full of amazement .
"How?" Is all she could muster.
"Just the beauty of natural, " Adam said . He glance at Rachel drenched hair . Her face full of awe and beauty . Her eyes glued to the rainbows. Her purple lips curled into a smile. Adam heart pounded . What the hell am I think? She is alive! I am dead! But why do I feel alive? Why do I want to lean in and kiss her? Does a guy ever learn to quick!
"What?" She asked. She glided a lock of hair behind her ear. "Your looking at me funny."
"Nothing," Adam mustered. Rachel watched as his Adam's apple bobble up and down. She smirked . She could tell he was lying but didn't want to say anything thing. She stared into his blue eyes that seemed to turn grey against the sky , they were tense ,
