I felt a jolt of energy and opened my eyes to see a white ceiling behind nurses heads. It was really loud with all the machines and people barking orders. I turned my head away from the light, I didn't know that Gil was next to me, and he had flatlined.
There was blood everywhere, every nurse had a surgeons apron on. Orders were shouted for more blood and various medicines that came in a syringe. He was within arms reach, so I tried to touch him. I had just barely gotten my hand to his when his heart monitor got a beat, and then another, until it had a slow bit steady pace.
All the nurses breathed a sigh of relief and calmed down. I kept my hand on his as long as I could, it was so cold. It didn't feel like Gil's hand at all.
"Okay sweetie, we are giving you some anesthetics so we can prep you to get the bullet out of you, alright?" I kept my gaze firmly on Gil, silently willing him to wake up. "Hun? I need you to answer me, are you listening?" I tuned out the nurse and focused all my energy on Gil. He looked like e was still in pain, even though he couldn't respond to anything. I felt a firm hand grab my wrist and bring it to my side as they put up the gates to my gurney. "Tell me what's going through your head," a nurse leaned over to ask the question, obstructing my view of Gil's unconscious body.
"I want to be with him," I whispered back to the nurse, "I want to know that he will be okay." Fresh tears fell down my cheeks.
"You will be, I promise, but for right now you need to get that bullet out of you, it is stuck in your heart. Your friend will be getting his surgery at the same time you are. I'm going to give you some medicine now that will put you asleep in a few minutes, so just lie down and relax, you will be awake in no time." The nurses voice was soothing, just listening to her made me feel calmer. She wiped the tears off my cheeks and administered the IV. I laid my head back and gazed up at the ceiling whispering the only words I could summon, "Let me love you forever, marry me."
