It was a complete disaster. Hands down the most awkward and uncomfortable situation Piper has ever been through.
Her father looked at Alex's mom, like a dog.
Diana was the kindest, most hard working, person Piper had ever met, and her father was judging her because of her financial income. It was the stupidest thing ever, Piper thought. But as much as she just wanted to scream her lungs out about this whole situation, she had to keep her mouth shut. Five hundred dollars was a lot of money, money that neither Diane nor Piper had. So being nice to her father, as much as an asshole he was being, was the only possible way to pay Alex's bail.
"Here you go", Diane put down two cups of tea in front of Bill Chapman and his daughter.
"Thank you Diane", Piper said softly preparing to take a sip of the hot cup of tea.
"PIPER!", he said a little too loud for the ladies' liking causing a little tea to spill from their cups.
While Diane went to the kitchen to get a rag, Piper tried to remain calm and turned to her father, "Yes, father", she said through her teeth trying to keep her cool. Diane came back and wiped the little puddle of spilled tea on the surface of the beaten up oak coffee table.
"You refer to her as Mrs. Vause", he said to Piper.
"Oh, I'm not married, and it's fine, I tell Piper that I preferred to be called by my first name", she sat back down and took a sip of tea.
"I do not teach my children to speak to their elders in such manner, Piper is an educated young lady, so from now on she shall refer to you as Ms. Vause and ma'am ONLY", he told me as he looked Piper straight in the eye.
"Well by her doing so, that would be disrespected me by neglecting my preferred title", Diane sweetly said causing a smirk to appear on Piper's lips.
In the little time Diane wasn't working whenever she talked to Piper, she would always have her back when Alex and her disagreed on something. It annoyed the fuck outta Alex, but deep down she secretly loved how close her mom and Piper were.
"What did you say happened to your husband again", Bill asked changing the subject for his own benefit.
"I never married", she responded.
"Well I'm sure you just didn't one day get pregnant with Alexandra", Bill reasoned with her.
"It's just Alex, not Alexandra. I was never fond of names with excessive letters, I'm the type of woman who likes to get straight to the point", she said, "and Alex's father is this loser I slept with a few times, now as much as I'd love to tell you that fabulous story, Bill, I think we've had enough chit-chat", she set down her tea.
"So can we please get straight to business so I can bring my seventeen year old daughter out of jail", she said.
He nodded his head, "Alright let's get to it then", he said, "We'll set up a payment plan. You can pay me a hundred dollars a month for five months, no interests, no taxes, no bullshit. Just pay me the correct amount on time".
Diane sighed and ran her hands through her hair, so that's where Alex gets it from, Piper thought.
"I can't afford a hundred per month, that's my rent money", Diane said.
Piper felt guilty. Even though this wasn't technically her fault this time, she felt somehow responsible. Then her face lit up as thought came into her head.
"Hey daddy", she said causing Bill and Diane to look towards Piper, "what if I dip into my trust fund and pay Alex's bail", she suggested.
Right when Bill was about to speak, Diane beat him to it, "That won't be necessary Piper, but thanks for offer", she politely declined.
"Fifty dollars per month for ten months", she said to Bill, "it's a long stretch, I know, but this way I can guarantee the money on time".
He thought for a moment, and decided to show mercy.
"Alright", he extended his hand, "deal".
They shook on it, "I have faith that you're genuine, so I'm sparing the paperwork to make this official in the eye of the law. Don't make me regret it", he said to her.
She nodded her head, went to the kitchen, and opened one of the drawers. She walked back over to them, and handed Bill and envelope, "Here's for the first month", she said.
He opened it and saw the money inside and nodded his head.
"Now can we please go spring my daughter out of jail", she said grabbing her car keys and purse.
"Of course", he got up and exited the apartment.
Piper went to follow right behind him, when she felt Diane hold her arm back, "Piper, um, can we please not mention this payment plan thing with Alex. I don't want her to worry about money right now", she asked Piper in a soft tone.
She nodded her head, "Yes ma'am".
Diane smacked the side of Piper's head playfully, and Piper laughed.
They stepped outside, Diane locked the door, then started to go down the stairs with Piper, "Now let's go get our little angel out of the can", they laughed.
