Three days after the baseball game I was walking down the street looking at a magazine when I bumped into someone. My magazine fluttered to the ground.
"Sorry." Said the person and I at the same time reaching for my magazine. I looked up as we both grabbed the magazine.
It was the boy from he baseball field, Ben.
"Oh! Hey JoAnne!" He said standing up and letting go of my magazine.
"Hey Ben." I said with a smile and tucking my magazine under my arm.
"What's up?" He asked smiling back.
"Nothing really, I'm headed out to meet my friends though." I said shrugging and scanning him. His brown eyes looked more light in the morning sun.
"Oh, can I come?" He asked scanning my face now.
"Yeah sure, I can introduce you to the rest of the guys. Oh, and if Gordie is a little rude to you, it's because he's pretty protective of me." I said looking across the street awkwardly.
Ace Merril was standing there glaring at me. Eyeball at his side.
"It's fine, what're you looking at?" He asked following my gaze to them.
"Let's just go. Quick." I said grabbing his forearm and dragging him to the treehouse.
I looked back to see Ace and Eyeball watching us make our way out to the edge of town.
"Who are they?" He asked looking back as well.
"The one with the dark brown hair is my other brother, Eyeball. The scarier looking one is Ace. Stay away from them. They are bad news." I said as we walked up the path to the treehouse. They boys were up there laughing already.
I let Ben's arm go and started climbing up the ladder.
I had a pair of old shorts and a loose fitting orange tank top. I got to the top to see all the boys already there.
"I have a guest for some of you guys to meet." I said taking a seat next to Gordie.
Ben popped his head up grinning.
"Hey." Said Ben sitting between Chris and Gordie.
"Hey Ben!" Said Chris highfiving him.
"You guys know each other?" I asked raising an eyebrow.
"After you and Gordo left,we met Ben." Said Teddy motioning to him and Chris.
"I haven't met him yet guys." Whined Vern from the corner.
"Ben that's Vern." I said chuckling and rolling my eyes.
Vern waved like the little dork he was making Ben chuckle.
"You want in on the game?" Chris asked Ben motioning to the cards.
"Sure. Do they wanna play too?" He asked nodding at Gordie and I.
"Nah. They suck at cards. Plus they like to sit and look at magazines for some reason." Said Teddy with his laugh.
