Chapter 27 ~ Abbegael
I can feel the furry blackness slipping away from me. Feel the burning fire of reality dragging me back to the surface and no matter how hard I fight to remain in the dark I can feel myself moving inexorably toward consciousness.
Light bores through my closed eyelids as red as the slick film of blood and sweat that I can feel coating my entire body. Before my eyes can adjust to the blinding light, it disappears and I feel the fiery breath of a demon against my cheek. The gut wrenching stench of burnt flesh overwhelms my senses and I jerk away fighting the urge to vomit. But the restraints hold me in place unable to escape the demon looming over me. Holding my breath, I wait, eyes averted for the next wave of pain to begin.
A hollow creaking bark emerges from deep within the creature, a sound I can only assume is its form of a chuckle and an involuntary shudder ripples through my body as it leans back and the other two step up to join it.
They skip the injections this time, unlike the countless episodes leading up to this one, but they would be next to useless on me now; every inch of my skin is torn, bloody or bruised and movement is all but impossible after enduring everything they have put me through. How long they have been at it I don't know, any sense of time has disappeared amongst the ebb and flow of consciousness; the vibrant hues of pain followed by the calm, peaceful darkness of nothingness.
The burning pain of a claw creeping softly along the swollen, inflamed skin of my stomach pulls a whimper from my lips and relaxing my tense muscles in preparation for what's coming is impossible.
They strike. All three at once. And my scream is barely a hoarse whisper; they've succeeded in taking away my only release from the pain. I feel a single trail of moisture slide down the curve of my cheek and cling desperately to the knowledge that I will not let him win.
A bolt of agony shoots through my body like lightening, sending spots dancing across my vision. And then it all disappears. I can still see the three of them standing over me, feel the solid heat of a claw embedded in muscle. But the pain is non-existent, as if someone has turned of the sensation altogether.
Abby? His voice instantly comforts me.Abby we can get you out of there, okay? Just hold on a little bit longer. His voice in my head is filled with more pain than I have experienced since Lucifer caught me and that's when realisation hits me; if Lucifer finds Zak he'll have both of us. And he really will be unstoppable.
Zak, no. You can't. If he catches you...If he finds out you're still down here...You can't. I'll survive. I won't help him. But...
Abby. Stop. I won't be coming anywhere near you. You're going to have to come to me, okay?
What? How? Thoughts race through my mind at his words but I can't seem to figure out how that is possible.
You have to let me in. Fully. We can use and enhance each other's abilities from a distance. I think we did it for a moment earlier before you forced me out. I can block out the pain for you like this, but if you let me in I might be able to heal you and with Carita's help restore your energy too. Then with our combined strength and abilities you can get far enough away from them to fly to us without anyone following.
