Chapter 2
|| Aubrey

  "Mom?"

It was 8:45 going on to 9. Outside was dark and kids from around the block were making their way inside of their homes. Where was I? I was about to take the risk of an eternity to save my life, or at least just to save my ass.

"Man, I told y'all I should've went home at 6. Look what time it is!" Charlie whispered frantically. She checked the time on her phone before reciting a short prayer to herself.

"Man if my mama kill me, I'm coming back and haunting you both--"

"Charlie would you shut up? Dang, you act like we out selling dope or some shit. We just vibing man." I furrowed my eyebrows looking at her before going back to watch Mr. Mengoles stack more food supply in the corner store across the street.

You see, every night at 9 Mr.Mengoles does this thing where he goes to the back to check all supplies and to stock up more food. He counts the money, then he empties the register, leaving about 6-7 minutes to just run out with anything you'd like.

I don't have to steal food for nothing  I have a middle class home, but I like the thrill of the chase.

Recently, my parents went off on a business trip to Nola, leaving my in Atlanta, Georgia all by myself. They'd leave for 2 weeks before coming back home to find out about all the bad things that has happen since they left.

If it's money to be made then shit, I don't mind. Go 'head. Just leave.

Mr.Mengoles check the time on the clock on the counter before heading towards the back room to check on his stock. Charlie and I casually walked into the store and walked around a bit picking up what we'd like. I looked at the clock before continuing to stuff my jacket.

"Psst. Charlie you done?"

"Almost, I'm tryna look for my hot fries and skittles. Oh, you know where the ice tea is? That bih be bussin'." She laughed and I snickered along with her.

"Yea, yea just hurry up 'fore he come back." Mr.Mengoles appeared from the back and back to the cash register. He watched us sitting on his stool, trying to count the money at the same time.

He kept looking up and down watching our every move like he knew we planned to use our 5 finger discount. I lifted my head and looked at Charlie and we both took off running.

"Hey! Come back here! Come back here now! If I catch you two it's a wrap!" He yelled from behind the door.

"Yea, yea old man. Sit yo' bald head ass down. Head built like a lightbulb." We laughed.  We ran around the corner towards Lenox Mall. Behind the wall was a pathway that led to an ally. In the ally there was a fence that was a shortcut to the houses across the street. Charlie stuffed her pockets climbing up and so did I. My foot fell from the fence and my jacket got stuck.

"Charlie -- Charlie help." I struggled to unhook my jacket from the fence seeing that my hands were practically tied behind my back together. I had my skittles bag in mouth, my drink and my phone in my pocket about to fall out, the powered donuts in my left hand since I had to pockets in my pants, and my house keys.

The sound of the county's polices sirens rung from miles away, but the sound played as though they were two feet away.

"Charlie man help the police comin'." I panicked. Charlie started pulling at my jacket trying to unhook the sleeve from the fence wire. I already had two strikes on my head one more and that was my ass.
