"You know, it might have not been the smartest idea, making the person we wanted help from so angry," teased Frisk.
"Shut up," grumbled Sans, but Frisk could see he was trying to hide a smile.
Frisk was just about to suggest a new plan when she heard a whisper from the shadow of the lab.
"Psst! Hey over here!" the hoarse whisper came. Frisk walked over to the shadows.
"What're you doin Sweetheart? asked Sans. He obviously hadn't heard the whisper.
"I-I heard something over here," said Frisk. She went up the to the shadow. It was strange. The Hotlands were filled with lava, there shouldn't be any shadows. Still, the lab was casting quite a large one. It was strange too. It was so dark. It was hard to see anything through the gloom.
Frisk peered into the blackness, straining her eyes to see anything. A strong hand suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the shadows.
"Frisk!" cried Flowey.
"Shut up!" yelled the monster that had pulled Frisk away. "Do you want her to come out and see me trying to help you?"
"Y-you want to help us?" Frisk asked the darkness. She still couldn't see who was helping her. The voice was strange though. It sounded human for the most part, but there were tones underneath that were interesting. The voice sounded slightly robotic, but still mostly human. They spoke with a tone that made them seem commanding, but also a bit like a drama queen. It was hard to describe, but that was the only way Frisk could think of it.
"Yes, I want to get out of here. I saw what you did in there. She didn't deserve that you know, she crueler than she looks. Believe me I know."
"Show yourself," said Sans. His eye glowed faintly, showing that he still didn't fully trust this person.
The monster scoffed.
"Fine, if you'll get off my back. It's your fault if she sees me though. I should't be out here, especially not talking to you. I only have a few minutes anyways."
Frisk stepped back out into the light, and the monster followed.
It was a robot, to Frisk's surprise, but that explained the voice. It looked almost like a cyborg, but there was no human part at all. It was all metal. It looked like a man, with shoulder length black hair. He had two sets of eyes that were a deep yellow. He seemed to have the body of a man too, but he had two pairs of arms. His upper pair of arms came out of spikes that seemed to be like the sleeves of his shirt, although it was built into him. Around his "waist" was a belt, and in the front, an orange SOUL. That's what it looked like anyways. It was in a glass section on the front of his belt. On his "feet" were a pair of tall orange boots. In fact, the parts of him that would be "skin" were a light grayish color, but the rest of his outfit was made up of either black, orange, or red of some shade.
"Hello darlings," he said, his eyes glittering.
"Hey, I know you, don't I?" asked Sans. "You're that TV show host or whatever that no one likes, right? Mettaton?"
Mettaton sighed.
"Yes, sadly, that's me. You know, I never wanted to be in show business, Alphys originally created me to kill humans, but I just wasn't into that. Didn't have the heart for it, you might say. After that, she forced me to entertain instead. I get hate mail all the time. Alphys still keeps me alive. She doesn't care about how I feel. She...the things she does in there..." He trailed off, shuddering.
"Anyway," he continued. "I was here to help you. You don't deserve to be stuck down here. Now, here's what you'll have to do. Go to Asgore's castle. This will be hard, but it's the only way to get out of here. Somehow, you're going to have to convince him not to kill you. That's step one. Get him to absorb one human SOUL. Then, he can enter through the barrier. He will be only one who can. He can take two more SOULs from the surface, come back, and free us all. I'm sorry, but that's the only way to get out of here. You'll have to convince everybody not to wage war on humanity again when we escape, but I might be able to help. Call me if you get that far." He winked. "Here's my number."
Until that moment Frisk had completely forgotten about the cell phone that Toriel had given her. She took it out, and entered Mettaton's number into it.
"METTATON?!" came a screech from the lab. "WHERE HAVE YOU GONE? WILL YOU NEED A REMINDER ABOUT HOW THINGS WORK DOWN HERE AGAIN?!"
"And that's my cue to leave," said Mettaton. "Don't want to get another lesson from her again." He shivered again.
"See you again darlings." He cracked one last grin, then disappeared back into the shadow, leaving the party deep in thought.
Before anyone could say anything Frisk burst out, "Let's do it."
"What?" cried Sans. "Sweetheart, are you crazy? Isn't that what you've been against this whole time? Hurting anyone? What's gotten into you?"
"Oh nothing Sans," Frisk smirked. "I guess you'll just have to wait and see won't you? I promise, nothing bad will happen. I have an idea on what we can do."
Sans stared at Frisk for a long moment, searching her face for a hint at what she was thinking. He found nothing, so gave up and sighed.
"Fine. Whatever. I guess I trust you Honey."
Frisk laughed a little and said, "You should."
"So we're off to Asgore's are we?" Flowey asked. He did not seemed pleased with that detail, but from the look on his face, he didn't want to talk about it. Frisk decided not to press him.
"Yeah, let's get away from this lab though, it's not really the safest place to be. I don't think I will be able to teleport for a while, I'm getting kind of tired."
"It might not be a good idea to try teleporting again anyways. We don't know if that presence is still going to be there, and we don't need to get separated again, even though it might have worked out slightly this time. I don't think that will happen again however." Frisk cautioned. She definitely did not want to feel that presence again, like something was crawling on her back, breathing onto her neck, pulling her away from her friends. She shuddered involuntarily.
"Good idea," agreed Flowey. "Let's get moving. We still have a long way to go. Next stop, the Core."
"The Core?" asked Frisk. "What's that?"
"Well, no one really knows much about the history of it," said Flowey. "But there is an elevator that leads to where the castle is. The only place you can get to it is in the Core. We will have to walk through the rest of Hotlands, but that shouldn't be too bad. There are some aggressive monsters here, but you have me to protect you." He grinned proudly and puffed out his petals a little bit.
Frisk smiled and ruffled his petals a little bit.
"Of course,' she said. "How could I be afraid? Now anyways, if we have a long way to go, then what are we waiting for? Let's get going!"
With that the band of travelers continued on their journey. Next stop...the Core.
