Harry, Ron, Jake, Christian, Fred, George and I were about to walk out of the Great Hall until Hermione stopped.
"Ron, we're supposed to show the first years where to go," Hermione said worriedly.
"Oh yeah," said Ron, who had obviously forgotten. "Hey hey you lot! Midgets!"
I stifled a small laugh, I can't believe Ron, a prefect called First years' midgets.
"Ron," Hermione hissed.
"Well, they are, they're small," Ron said.
"I know, but you can't call them midgets. . . . First years," Hermione called commandingly along the table.
"You were a midget once Ron, remember that," I chuckled.
"This way, please!"
A group of new students walked shyly up the gap between the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables, all of them trying hard not to lead the group. They did indeed seem very small; I was sure I had not appeared that young when I had arrived here. I grinned at them. A blond boy next to Josh Abercrombie looked petrified, nudged Josh, and whispered something in his ear.
"See you later," Harry, Jake and I said to Ron and Hermione and we made our way out of the Great Hall alone, doing everything we could to ignore more whispering, staring, and pointing as we passed.
I kept my eyes fixed ahead as we wove our way through the crowd in the entrance hall, then we hurried up the marble staircase, took a couple of concealed shortcuts, and had soon left most of the crowds behind. I'd have to be stupid not to expect this, I thought angrily, as I walked through much emptier upstairs corridors. Of course everyone was staring at Harry, Cedric and I: We had emerged from the Triwizard maze two months ago when Harry and Cedric cried over my supposed dead body as we escaped from Voldemort. There had not been time last term to explain ourselves before everyone went home, even if I had felt up to giving the whole school a detailed account of the terrible events in that graveyard. We had reached the end of the corridor to the Gryffindor common room and had come to a halt in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady before we realized that we did not know the new password.
"Er . . ." Harry said glumly, staring up at the Fat Lady, who smoothed the folds of her pink satin dress and looked sternly back at him.
"No password, no entrance," she said loftily.
"Guys, I know it," someone panted from behind us, and we turned to see Neville jogging toward us.
"Guess what it is? I'm actually going remember this password!"
"Sounds great Neville so can you kind of hurry up on that password, some people want to sit," I said impatiently.
Neville nodded and said the password.
"Why don't you two head in I'm going to see if Hermione needs help with Ron," I chuckle.
Harry sends me a small smile and follows Neville inside. Before I leave I hear loud screams.
I enter the common room and saw Seamus and Harry standing face to face their fists clenched.
"What's going on," I asked.
"Do you believe the rubbish Harry is saying about You-Know-Who," Seamus said.
I look around and see the twins sitting down next to Ginny and Christian, them not saying a word.
"In fact Seamus I do believe every word Harry says about Voldemort, I was there," I said. "Anyone else have a problem with Harry?"
Silence.
"That's what I thought," I sneered.
I grab Harry's hand and lead him out of the common room and towards the astronomy tower.
"Thank you," Harry whispered.
"You're my best friend Harry, of course I'd defend you," I said.
We climbed on top of the roof and sat down looking up at the sky. Harry's hand holding mine. Silence fills the air.
"What's on your mind," Harry asks.
I sighed.
"I never thought that I would hate the day we would have to come back its just everything reminds me of that night," I sighed.
"I have dreams of that night too.." Harry sighed. "And I know you're going to say it isn't the same but I really care for you and Cedric. When I heard you scream in pain. When you were so lost and numb. When Cedric cried for you and told everyone to leave you two alone."
"I know you've been having the nightmares Harry," I admitted.
Harry scrunched his brows.
"You need to stop letting Voldemort into your mind.." I sighed.
"You've seen inside my mind," Harry asked in disbelief.
I nodded.
"That's how I knew Voldemort was messing with your mind, I'd kick him out once I entered but the images he'd show you.. they were proof enough he wasn't only torturing me, he's been torturing us all. You, Cedric and I," I sighed.
"You invaded my mind," Harry said angrily.
"To protect you Harry," I sighed. "I screwed up keeping Cedric safe, I sure as hell am not screwing up keeping everyone safe. I'm not losing Cedric and I'm not losing you. You can push me away all you want but I will always be there."
Harry and I remained silent for a while. He then stood up.
"Good night," He said stiffly.
He climbed down from the tower roof and left me. Harry didn't wait for me he left me alone in silence.
