There was a long pause.

"The keeper isn't here. She leaves around 2:00p.m. and comes back around 6:00p.m. Sorry." I couldn't read his face. It was rather strange. I decided to break the ice.

"Soooo what's your name?" He was startled because he was staring off.

"Marvin....Irwin," he started to loosen up a bit. Asking him questions seemed to calm him down, so like any other person I asked more.

"Where do you live?" It felt a little invasive for me to ask that. He perked up, and stalled me.

"What time is it?" He responded like I hadn't even asked the question. I looked around.

"Ummmm," I whispered this, but he understood. He pulled out his phone. I read the time as 5:30. Why would he ask me if he had a phone?

"I have to go..."his voice trailed off as a familiar car drove up. The keeper. She's never this early. He started his car and drove away. I wanted to talk to him more.

The orphanage doesn't have other teenagers except for Bernice, Alissa, and Fauna. They didn't like me. They saw me as a threat because I was prettier than them. Not to be boasting, but I can't really help it. They haven't been here as long as I have. Why don't they pick on me about that?

As I gathered the kids together, the keeper hopped out of the car, and she ran straight to the fence. Exactly where I was standing. I looked over at Marvin who was still pulling out. He just waited in the car and watched.

"WHO WAS THAT?!" The keeper screamed at me. I looked behind to make sure the kids didn't see this. They were anxious to know what was going on.

"ANSWER MY QUESTION!" Her voice sounded like knives to my heart.

"I don't know...." I said this because I really don't know. She stared at me looking for an answer. I looked behind me, and the kids were gone. Except the other teenagers stayed to watch.

"Strike 4. No supper for you." She said as she stomped away. I grabbed my stomach as it growled. She gave us strikes if we messed up. I heard a boo from the other teenagers. I knew who it really was..Bernice. She and her friends left while mocking me under their breath. I looked over hoping to find Marvin still there, but he wasn't. I was left alone in the empty darkness.
