"Scorpius!"
I turned to see Albus striding towards me looking shocked and a little angry.
"What?"
"What was that look you were giving my sister just now?"
I flushed. "I don't- I mean I can't- well..."
"You fancy her," Al stated bluntly.
I flushed still deeper and said nothing.
He shook his head. "Mate, your heart is going to get broken again and broken hard. I thought you'd moved on!"
"I thought I had, too."
"She's never cared two straws for any boy but Lorcan- and you saw how that turned out."
"Al, I know she's about the hardest witch to get at Hogwarts, but..."
"About the hardest? You mean the hardest. Almost every girl here is head-over-heels for you, even Rosie, which I thought would never happen. And you had to go for my sister? Dad thinks no one's good enough for her, and I rather-"
"You agree with him?" I asked bluntly.
Al flushed. "Look, Lils is the family beauty, the family genius, and the family athlete- she's even the family prankster. The only thing I know of that she isn't good at is behaving herself. She's the reason Headmistress McGonagall retired, you know that, right? She thought she was safe from Weasley pranksters after Fred and James only caused minor mayhem and I didn't cause any, but then Lily and Roxy got here. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that Lily is too good for most anyone."
I scowled. "Too good for me?"
"Well," Albus said slowly, "I expect I wouldn't mind too much if she was with you. I mean, I'd rather trust you with her than most other people... but you'd never be able to get her."
"We'll see," I told him. "Bet?"
"Ten galleons."
"Done."
"Rose."
She was sitting alone. When she looked up, her face turned scarlet and she tried to get up and run.
"Rose, wait!"
She turned back to face me with a resigned air. "What do you want, Scorpius? To humiliate me in front of your darling Lily again?"
I flushed. "You know?"
"I do now. I watched you during the game and after. You like her even more than you did in our fifth year. I didn't think that was even possible." She wiped a hand across her eyes.
"Look, Rose, I'm so sorry for flirting with you last summer. I shouldn't have done it. And I'm sorry for raising your hopes by asking you to the Yule Ball and not explaining why I did it."
"Why did you?"
I hesitated, but I had to tell her the whole thing. "Lily wanted me to."
She put her face in her hands. "Lily," she moaned, as if to herself, "why are you such a fatally good cousin?" She looked up with a little more red in her eyes. "I thought that you asked me because you fancied me. That's why I thought kissing you-" she reddened even more. "That's why I thought you would be alright with it."
I groaned. "Rosie, I am a first-class git for leading you on, but besides that time in the summer, I didn't know I was doing it, I swear."
She waved it off. "That's alright." She looked purely miserable. "So you don't fancy me at all? You never did?"
I shook my head, feeling like a murderer. "It was always Lily."
She nodded, and the last bit of hope in her eyes died down. "Alright. But please go if you have any respect for my feelings."
I turned and walked away feeling her eyes trace my footsteps as I got farther and farther from my friend of several years. I wondered: was that friendship over?
