Firehouse Dog Fanfic | The Dogpatch Family | A New Home for Dewy?

Later towards eight at night, Amber arrived home with Dewy attached to his leash and as she entered, she was surprised to notice her father sitting at the dining room. He was holding a beer and watching the sports channel, a football game. Something they used to watch together from time to time before everything turned to shit.

Connor glanced over his shoulder towards the door, noticing his daughter and the winning dog come in. "Hey," He said, looking at her curiously when she locked the door behind her, detaching Dewy from his leash, "Where've you been?" He obviously guessed it was with Masen – but he was cautious. He knew full well that those two were best friend but he couldn't help but wonder – were they something a little more than that after all this time?

The two were grown teenagers, nearly the age to be leaving home for college and so it's always been in the back of his mind while his daughter was growing up.

Amber shook off the surprise for her father actually being home, but answered with hesitant smile, "Just out with Masen and Sparky." The last couple of minutes at the lake hadn't exactly been expected and the event kept replaying in her head, she didn't know what to think about it. And a few times before that, she noticed how close Sparky and Dewy seemed to get ... it made her curious.

The thing bugging on her mind was definitely a 'Pep' question for tomorrow.

There was no way she was revealing that to her father, especially when they still weren't as close as before. Thinking about it and much to her shock, he was actually trying. Him being home right now constituted as 'trying' and there have been a few occasions over the last couple of days where he's actually 'tried' again. Whether he knew what he was doing or not was another concept all together.

Amber hung up the leash on the hooks beside the door before heading into the panty, the room just beside. She started pouring doggie kibble into a dinner bowl for Dewy. "Did you have fun?" Her father called from the other room.

Amber's cheeks started to blush lightly, thinking back to it again. "Yeah, we just hung out like usual." She told him in a casual voice, hiding her face as she placed the bowl on the floor, leaving the pantry door open just a little afterwards.

Connor didn't see this blush, "Come sit with your old man," He requested, wanting to spend some actual time with his daughter. They haven't really spent any time together since Marc died – he knew it was his fault, though. He could see that now. "Watch some football like the old days."

Again, Amber was surprised but didn't react this time. "Uh, yeah." She murmured after thinking about it a moment. She took off her shoulder bag, putting it to the side before heading over to where her father was sitting – she sat in the chair next to him, looking a little awkward as they watched the screen together.

Suddenly, Connor started chuckling – thinking back to today's events and how well it went. It's probably the best day the Station's had in months, and in this father-daughter relationship. Amber turned to him strangely – was he laughing at the game? She knew this team sucked but it wasn't that bad.

"What?" She was curious, having a feeling it had nothing to do with the game.

Connor stopped his chuckles, now just smiling, "It's just been a long time since I've seen my guys that happy." He admitted, glancing over to her with a proud smile, "You did good out there – you and Dewy."

'He looks proud ... he actually looks proud of me!' Amber shyly smiled to herself, her plan had worked after all. She looked down before turning back to the screen, that was just what she needed to hear.
