Firehouse Dog Fanfic | The Dogpatch Family | Moving On

Amber actually had a smile on her face the moment she placed her skateboard into the locker this morning; for the first time in a while, she really wanted to learn. It was like an alien feeling had come over her – but it wasn't just school that she was excited to see today, it was Masen. A blush crawled lightly against her cheeks when his face popped up into her mind.

Ever since pre-school, they've been the best of friends and they've never really had any fights. But on Saturday, after the ... kiss. She couldn't stop thinking about it and how ... nice it felt, how ... natural. She didn't just see him as the best friend she's had her whole life anymore – she was now actually seeing him in a romantic light.

A body suddenly leaned against the lockers beside her, "Hey, Amb." Masen made his introduction, his usual grin plastered on those lips of his. He made her jump slightly, especially when she had been cooped away in her mind ... once again.

Amber let out a small laugh, "Hey, back." She replied, getting the textbook she needed out of her locker, putting it in her arms along with a notebook.

"Oh, we won't be needing a textbook today." Masen reminded her, tapping the cover of the book in her arms – he had his backpack over to one side of his shoulder, the one that wasn't leaning sidewards against the locket.

Amber frowned, glancing down at the book before turning to him with confusion, "What do you mean?" She questioned.

Masen sighed, looking at her with a raised eyebrow, "Test today ... remember?" He prompted her memory.

"Ah, man – I completely forgot." Amber tilted her head back with exasperation before letting out her own sigh, swiftly putting the textbook back into her locker as well as the notebook. The Unit test was today, the one she spent days preparing for (after the essays had been completed, of course).

Masen looked at her carefully, "You're not skipping again ... are you?" Wanting to make sure – every time he's mentioned a test or quiz over the last couple of months, it's resulted in a 'no-show-Amber'. He didn't want to seem like the type of guy who judges when someone skips – he was just simply worried about her more than anything.

Amber sent him a small smile, "No," She began, speaking honestly, "I'm not skipping anymore. I'm getting myself back together – I wanna be the old 'me' again."

Masen nodded, approving of her new plan. He could already see the changes she's made, ever since the Firehouse Dog Competition several weeks ago. "Well, good for you." He complimented, never losing his smile. As she closed the locker, putting the lock back on it for security – he held out his hand, "So, girlfriend ... can I escort you to class." His smile widening just a little more at his own mention of the specific word.

Amber couldn't help but chuckle, looking down with another red flush staining her cheeks, "Sure." She shyly accepted, placing her hand in his before they headed down the hallway. There were several stares following them from behind, but the two ignored them – making their way to do the dreaded Unit test.

...

Amber felt very giddy by the time she made it back to Dogpatch after school, a graded test paper in her hand with a very high mark. The moment she walked through the door, heading towards the kitchen – she noticed Joe in there, sitting at the table with food all around him – she never even realized what he was actually doing. The proudness of her own mark still getting to her.

"Hey, Joe," She announced her presence, putting her skateboard over to the side where it wouldn't get in the way. "Check this out." For the first time since Uncle Marc and the Chief died ... she felt like boasting about success.
