IMPORTANT NOTE - So, you'll notice if you look back on the chapters - there are a few changes. 'The Consequences of Skipping' and 'The Mutt from Hell' have been FULLY edited. The other chapters have a few differences but not too much. I didn't really touch those. Nothing major has changed, just better grammar and spelling and such.
Enjoy your long awaited chapter!
Firehouse Dog Fanfic | The Dogpatch Family | A Fire at Home
The ceiling beam in the hallway collapsed, falling to the ground at an angle where it was barely able to keep anything lifted. There were patches of fire everywhere in the building, but more so around the area of the initial explosion. The air was quickly filling up with smoke and the cleanest of air was being saturated with the potent gases.
Inside the kitchen and lying on the floor, Zach groaned as he started to wake up. His head having been banged when his body dissented to the floor with a thud. There was also chair laying against his back so when he moved his aching body, it fell off him with a clattering noise. He was covered in ashes and soot from head to toe. It took him a second to actually register where he was, but when he did, he also remembered what had happened just before the blast.
"AMBER?!" He suddenly shouted, remembering that the teenager had been with him before everything went dark. Coughing, he stumbled up into a standing position and the room was blasting with heat - there were several patches of fire and all of it separated him from the other side of the room. "Amber, can you hear me?!"
Zach was looking through the wreckage trying to find Amber, but he couldn't see her - she must either be somewhere under the rubble or probably found a way out and left him. A feeling in his gut knew it was the first one, though, she had been closer to the blast than he had. The fire was spreading quickly and his coughing worsened with each breath he tried to take. He tried moving some of the furniture but it was quickly consumed by fire within a matter of seconds.
He stumbled backwards as the flames started moving towards him.
"Amber?!" He continued to shout, but he was still receiving no kind of answer. He couldn't even hear any small moans. On the ceiling, electricity sparked from a cut line. "AMBER?!" He tried just once more before a part of him knew it was useless. Quickly after realising this, he began backing away towards the entrance of the kitchen that wasn't eradicated by fire as of yet.
Zach was going to leave her there just in order to save himself - he was in fight or flight mode, and his brain was telling him that flight was the only option he could take.
As he walked down the hallway with a small sigh of relief, he was glad to see that fire hadn't reached the back entrance of the building nor his route to escape the place just yet. However, he didn't account for one thing and that's what prevented him from leaving.
Dewy.
Zach stumbled back with a small yelp, his skin jumping when a sudden vicious growl appeared before him in the form of a dog. It was Dewy, the mutt that had recently been added to the Fahey family - the one that should be back off in Hollywood-land by now. Dewy's teeth were showing, and by the look on his face, he wasn't afraid to go in for the bite - especially when Zach began looking up towards the door that was now slowly being covered by fire.
He was trapped.
Zach swallowed hard, licking his dry lips when he realised what kind of a situation he was in. He knew the dog wasn't letting him leave judging by that growl, also it's probably because he looked more than awfully suspicious right now. He did fear that Engine 55 had arrived earlier than he had planned, meaning that his being here would be completely questioned. He knew Sellars wouldn't save him either, the guy was a notorious bastard when you really get to know him.
