Firehouse Dog Fanfic | The Dogpatch Family | Tunnel Collapse

The next day came quickly and before Amber knew it, she was in school – sitting in her History seat and ready to learn. Her books were out and her pencil ready, but the only part of today she actually dreading was seeing Masen.

She looked up towards the classroom door, the bell was about to ring at any moment and he still wasn't here. She thought back to yesterday, the thing that kept making her cheeks flush a deep red in most cases – she still couldn't seem to wrap her head around it.

"So, what are you going to do after Graduation?" Masen asked, sitting next to Amber by the bank while Dewy and Sparky played in the lake water. He broke off a bit of a sandwich and placed it in his mouth. They had made a small stop at the corner shop on their way to the lake, getting something to eat so they didn't starve to death.

Amber sent him a small shrug, she really didn't know anymore. Now that her father was actually trying again – staying in town was actually sounding like a nice option. "Not really sure, honestly." She told him, taking a sip from the bottle of water in her hand. "I haven't gotten any acceptance letters from colleges yet, but then, I haven't had any that've said I'm not accepted either."

Masen sent her an encouraging smile, "I'm sure you'll get acceptances from all of them." He said honestly, "You're the smartest girl I know." Even if she has been declining over the last couple of months – but who could blame her? She's been through a lot.

Amber looked down with an embarrassed flush, "Thanks."

Masen licked his bottom lip, a thought coming to mind – but really, it's something that been on his mind for years now. "H-Hey, Amber?" He stuttered, not really sure how to approach the subject of what he wanted to talk about. He was a little scared to how she might react ... or say, for that matter.

Amber frowned inside, hearing the stuttering which wasn't normal for him. She acted normal with her reply, "Hmm." She hummed, nodding her head to tell him she was listening – her head twisted towards him in anticipation.

Masen felt frozen, "I-" He stopped, feeling like such a fool. How was he supposed to tell a girl he's met since pre-school that he more than 'friendship' feelings for her? She'll probably think he's just joking around – but in reality, he really wasn't. He needed to stop being such a wimp, because if he didn't act soon on these feelings he has – someone else might capture her heart first.

This time; Amber creased her eyebrows with confusion, suddenly wondering if he were okay. He didn't usually act like this. It's like he wanted to tell her something – but something inside was stopping him from doing so. "Masen, what is it?"

"I like you." He blurted out in a second, saying it a little too loud – luckily there was no one passing by.

Amber smiled slightly, "I like you too." Although she was a little confused by the statement – they were best friends ... of course they like each other. What was he trying to get at?

Masen sighed, shaking his head – feeling a little more confident than before. "No, Amb-" He started, looking into her eyes now, "-I mean ... I really like you." Putting emphasis on the 'Really' part.

Amber suddenly blinked, figuring out what he was trying to say. "O-Oh." She was the one to stutter this time, not really sure how to react towards a statement like that. He 'liked' her ... as in, more than a best friend? Her heart skipped a beat and a breath caught in her throat – not once in her life (which wasn't very long) has any guy ever said anything like that. But ... she couldn't help but wonder back on her own feelings ... did she like him back like ... that?
