Chapter 3

Sunny Taylor

I put my hand down on my dress to keep it from blowing up and exposing my cupcake panties yet again. Dress + Bike + Cupcake Panties – Shorts = Disaster.

I stopped my bike slowly as I came up to the bench I had discovered yesterday on the way home from school. I noticed the flower plant in the planter next to it. There were Daniella's favorite flowers, perfectly blooming. They always bloomed in the fall. I smiled sadly and picked one, expertly tucking it in my hair and securing it with a bobby pin that had been holding my baby hairs back.

I began to peddle again, looking at the small town going by me. I liked being in a smaller town. Growing up in a city was interesting, but not the best for a childhood. I had to learn to ride a bike here, with Daniella's bike. It was only seven hours away from where my mother and Ross lived, but it was far enough that we couldn't just drive down whenever.

I thought about how different it would have been if I had grown up here. Mother never would have met Ross, and though dad still might have died from cancer, he would have been happier before. The city always stressed him out.

My thoughts were cut short when I arrived at school. I locked up my bike and checked my dress to make sure it wasn't tucked into my underwear. Did that once getting out of a car, never did it again.

I was wearing a cute peach dress that had floral pattern on the top, with matching sandals, and some cute, color-coordinated bracelets. The flower was the perfect touch.

I strolled over to my locker, opening it on the third try. I smiled, proud of myself and sending a silent thanks to Bo. I looked around and noticed that the hallway was nearly empty. There were a few people lingering by, but not nearly as many as the day before.

That's why I got so nervous when I noticed a familiar taller, redheaded boy approach me. My grip on the book I was getting out tightened and I heard him say, "I need to talk to you."

I pulled the book out, holding it and closing my locker before saying, "I don't know you and you don't know me besides a brief introduction, so I can't imagine what you would want to talk about." Whoa, where did that come from? Something about this town was making me braver. Maybe it was because I was drinking that tap water.

Or so I thought. His eyebrows creased and he took a step closer, making the space between us a meager foot. I got nervous, my knuckles turning white from the tight grip I had on my math book, which felt like the most important item in the world at the moment.

I felt the blood rushing through my veins, the panic starting. He said, "I know exactly who you are. You are her cousin. I need to talk to you about her. And we have met, so we know each other technically."

He had a very cold and serious face. I felt the feeling in my stomach alerting me a panic attack would commence soon if I didn't get rid of the threat. I quietly said, "Please, leave me alone."

He shook his head and laughed humorlessly before angrily saying, "No! You will listen to me! Just do as I say!"

I couldn't wrap my head around the situation. This Jason guy was acting so strange. Why did he think he could tell me what to do? I got really scared when it happened.

"I believe the girl told you to leave her alone," Oh sweet heavens that voice. The deep voice from behind me had me frozen. It was like beautiful music in my ears. I paused those thoughts to reflect on the fact I had just reacted like that. To a simple voice. While fighting off a panic attack.

Jason snapped up to my rescuer and challenge and amusement danced in his eyes as he smirked and said, "Oh, her? No, she has no power. You can tell, I can tell, but she cannot. In fact, I could just take her right now."
