Chapter 8

Here Kassy, Kassy, Kassy

 ____________________________________________________________________________

In the main square two groups face off. Five miners their arms bulging with biceps gained from years of manual labor face off against seven burly Brewers. Though none could remember the cause, all were ready to fight.

Mothers grabbed their children and ran for cover while youths gathered to watch and place bets.

Both groups were drunk on the strong ale brewed not far from where they stood. Strong words where yelled back and forth with the peace being held by an ever-shrinking margin.

Leira POV

I have had to go outside the city gates to look for Kachiri. I have not seen her all week and I am starting to get worried. Ariel has not seen anything bad happen to her but she also said Kachiri will not be coming back.

So here I am wondering the valley floor carrying some of Kachiri's favorite dried eel pieces singing, "Here Kassy, Kassy, Kassy."

She hates it when I treat her like a pet, but I have tried for the last two hours to mentally reason with her so I figure if I really piss her off she might come out to tell me off.

There was a soft scuttle of rocks off to my right before a flaming pink Kachiri appeared before me. "Stop it, Human!"

"There you are pretty Kassy; where have you been? Mummy has been so worried." Bending forward I reach out to rub her chin before thinking the better of it. I heard mental sniggers coming from behind and figured Kachiri had an audience.

   “Human!”

“Fine sorry, so where have you been? You haven’t bugged me for food in a while… Did father step on your tail again?”

  “Huff!”

“Come on tell me what’s up, don’t make me to go all Mummy Wummy on your ass.”

  “You would not!”

“Come on baby, tell mummy what’s wrong.”

“I despise you!” Her bright pink skin turns to a darker shade.

“I can keep this up all day.” Smiling in triumph.

“Fine! I simply could not stand the pressure.”

   “Pressure? What pressure?”

“Can you not feel it Human? Of course you not feel it, your senses are too weak. There is oppression in the atmosphere. A heavy cloud that I could taste in on my skin. Here the air is pure, you yourself must feel the effects”

Kachiri was right. I had not noticed it until she had explained but some of the reason I had been out here so long was because I was repelled at the though of going home.

  “What is causing it?”

   “I know not.”

“And you plan to stay here?”

“Until it departs. Is that dried eel?”

  “Yes.”

   “Food, Human. Food!”

“You take off on me for over a week. Leave without any warning of what is coming and you expect me to feed you?”

    “Naturally.” Bowing her head condescendingly.

“Fine, here. But that is all you will get until you return.”

   “No it will not.”

Childishly I stuck out my tongue and started the long walk back to the gates.

“Oh and Human, one more thing. It is gaining in strength.”
