Chapter 11
Freak out
____________________________________________________________________________
Leira's POV
We still haven’t found Jarad. Ariel is determined that it is not him, but Kachiri disappeared just days after his arrival. Ariel’s vision was only hours before he arrived, and I can’t get a full reading off him. He seems like a nice guy but seriously what do people say about smoke and fire?
We find Griffin though; sitting on the council steps, resting against a pillar, his shoulders slumped in defeat as he watches Sofi and Aaron cross the square towards the spring.
‘She is so beautiful. God, I am such an idiot, why would she look twice at someone like me.’
I stopped and tried to have an objective look at my friend. I suppose he was all right looking, in a way. His physique was well defined and toned without being hulking like most of the men in town. His face was pleasing enough; it was fairly proportioned except for his nose that was slightly crooked, somehow his forest green eyes still shone bright. His hair was cropped close to his head like most peoples; it really was impractical to have long hair in this heat.
The best thing about Griffin was that he is so kind and very loyal. I have accidently stumbled into his mind on more then one occasion and know that he would do anything to help anyone, he is that selfless. I never have understood why Sofi would pick someone as arrogant as Aaron over Griffin.
“You really need to cut back on your obsession man. It is not helping your course.” I but his shoulder as I pass.
“Hey girls, what’s new?” he turns his back to the square.
“We were hoping you could tell us. How many fights have you had to clean up since the last supply ship?”
“Including this last one? Nine with serious injury, but I have heard others that haven’t needed my medical skills.”
“And before Jarad came?” He squints his eyes while he searches for the answer.
“It’s not-” I raise my hand cutting Ariel off
“Before? Let me think… Maybe one or two a month, usually between the miners and the brewers.”
“Doesn’t the increase seem odd to you?”
“Well yeah, but it has been really hot. I though that’s why.”
“We live is a desert idiot, it is always hot. Look, I think there is something more to it then that. Something sinister.”
“Come on, Lei. What are you talking about?”
“Not here, we have to leave the town before it is safe.”
“Safe? Come on really? What’s going on?” Standing up with exasperation.
“Follow us and you will understand.”
Griffin's POV
Why the hell are they making me walk all this way in this stinking heat? It is almost Somnum! I should be at home getting something to eat not walking out the stupid gate.
Where the hell are they taking me anyway? No one comes out here except for brewers and miners, and even they don’t walk! I should just turn around, leave these to two die from the heat. Serves them right if they want to….
“You feel it don’t you?” Lei has turned around to ask
“Feel what?” I ask even though I kind of know what they are talking about. I was so mad before I almost could barely control myself but now, nothing.
I step back towards town and suddenly feel the anger building again. Walking back to where they stand I am once again calm. “What’s going on?”
“We don’t fully know, we have been trying to find Jarad to get some information but we haven’t found him yet.” Ariel started. “Have you seen him?”
“Look we know what you are, or more importantly what you can do.” Stated out of nowhere.
“I don’t know what you mean?” I really didn’t, what is with this girl.
“There is a shelter up ahead for people who get caught out in the sun, let’s talk there.”
With that Lei just marches off, expecting me to follow, and Ariel inclines her head towards Lei before she leaves too.
So I here I am left in the middle of the valley path trying to decide which way to go, my head swivels from the safety of the town to the retreating figures of the girls. I don’t know what to do, I have to find out how much they know but at the same time I have a feeling this will change my life.
It doesn’t take long to reach the shelter; the cool room is a relief from the burning sun. “Ok what do you think I can do?”
“You’re a healer.” Lei tells me as if it was obvious.
“Yes, I know, its my job,” I wave my hands about for emphasis.
“No, you idiot. You are a healer; you can physically heal someone if you chose by touching them. I have even seen you fix shattered bones before.”
“No I can’t! Lei no one can do that.” I want to leave the cave but soon realized I was trapped. If I leave now I would never find cover in time. God they must of planned this.
“Yes they can, you can. I saw you fix Sofi when she fell off that ledge three years ago, she wasn’t supposed to be able to walk after that but she was up and about in five weeks. Your one of us, you’re special and you are not alone, there are others in town who can do special things too.”
“No you’re wrong, I can’t do anything and nether can you.” Enraged I storm over and get up in her face, poking her chest with each point I make.
Yet she stares back at me with emotionless eyes. They don’t know anything, they can’t! Should I risk it? Maybe if I run I would make it as far as the gatehouse. I could heal the burns if they’re not to bad.
“You have nothing to fear Griffin. We wont harm you but it is time you accepted what is happening. You have known for some time now that you are different. You just have to accept that we are too.” When Lei first started to speak, I had turned around to yell at her again. But her mouth wasn’t moving, I could hear her clearly but her mouth did not move until the end.
“I wouldn’t try and run Griff, you don’t make it. I see you burnt to a crisp about a mile short of the guardhouse. Even with the healing you can’t keep up with the damage.” Ariel’s calm voice eerily predicting my demise shocked me out of my stupor.
This can’t be happening.
This can’t be happening!
What are they?
What do they want?
Oh god!
