"So you went all the way out to Huston to look at a pet?" Jack settles down onto the sofa, handing Kurt a beer, with one for himself.
"Uh, yeah. Yeah. I've gone farther before. Honestly, Huston is a one way flight. No stopping to get another flight." The red head shrugs and takes a drink.
"Seems kinda out of the way? Just for a pet? Was it like...a really special one?" Jack leans over to the side table, turning on his baby monitor. Jay was asleep upstairs, and he had to make sure it stayed that way.
"No? I mean, are there special and not special pets?" Kurt laughs. "No, honestly, it's completely normal."
"To go to Huston? With no warning?" Jack was skeptical.
"Yeah. You know you're the weird one right?" Kurt looks Jack over. "Just finding some pet out on the streets? No. Never. Can't imagine it." Kurt shakes his head. "Jay didn't have a chip, or a collar, or a tattoo. Nothing. Crazy. " He takes another drink. "I've been on the international list for three years."
"Three?"
"20 is the earliest you can get on. It's alot of paper work, house check, they gotta check your taxes, you criminal and driving history. Work history even. It's alot." Kurt shakes his head.
"Why do they need all that information? Seems like kind of over kill?"
"Well see, then you get put in your list. They assign you this letter code. Like five letters, mine is LFKKU. No idea what it stands for," Kurt waves his hand dismissively. "But there's alot of them? And when pet's come on the adoption market, they go through evaluations and gets a code as well. If the code matches, they call the first couple people from that list, we all rush to meet the pet."
"Why would they call multiple people? Seems like abit of a dick move."
" Not everyone shows up." Kurt shrugs. "Those who show up are told the pets history, needs, predicted future needs, and get to spend some time with it. From there it's decided who leaves with the pet."
"That's...alot of work to get a pet." Jack picks at the label on his bottle
"Yeah? Well pets are alot of work. Its a living, thinking thing that depends on you. You better be ready to put your life down for it." Kurt sets his empty beer down
"Oh. I guess," Jack trails off, setting his half empty beer down. "Here let me get you another."
"Don't. I drove." Kurt waves Jack down. "You got so...so lucky ya know?" Kurt frowns at Jack. "Do you know what normal people do to get pets like Jay? What Jay is /worth/." Kurt shakes his head. "If you had turned around, and sent him the the humane shelter, and put him through adoption? He'd have been gone in two days. Sold him? Hundreds of thousands."
"He didn't look this cute when I first found him," Jack jokes.
"Doesn't matter. People see past that stuff easy. Not every pet coming off adoption is in show status when we meet them." Kurt sighs. "See, getting a pet through adoption is hard. Long. No promise when you'll get one. That'll you'll ever get one." He was quiet a moment. "The other option is to buy one straight from the litter. Do you know expensive that is? You're paying for something that took 9 months to be create. And then when do you want to pick them up? Some people don't mind getting them as infants. They're family pets, ya know? Play with the kids, forever baby? It's great. Others? No, they don't pick the pet up till it's much older. After all, once they hit puberty? No one want's to fuck the baby they taught to walk and talk."
Jack coughs and sits forward, rubbing his palms together. "Makes sense." He nods once.
"Makes you so uncomfortable doesn't it?" Kurt watches him.
"I mean. I didn't teach him to walk or talk, but. Yeah."
"What? That he's a boy? Too young looking?" Kurt pries.
"It seems wrong? He's so..innocent? I mean, he's seen me naked. We take baths and what not. But like, it he's never seemed to even notice?"
"Have you had him checked?" Kurt raises an eyebrow.
"Yeah. The doctor said he's...been with someone. I asked him, and he didn't seem to remember? So maybe the guy was wrong?"
"It probably doesn't stick out in his mind that much. It's basic to them, Jack. Especially Petites. It's what they've been made for." Kurt gives a firm nod.
"So that's what you're doing? You want a pet to fuck?" There was an edge to his voice, for sure.
"Don't turn this on me. I have always wanted a pet, always. I want to care for them. In all the ways they need. I'm a natural care taker, it's in my blood. I want something that needs me. You? You found Jay on a whim, and you don't even know what you'll do when he has a heat."
They stare at each other quietly. They weren't angry at each other. Jack knew Kurt would be perfect to any pet he could get. Kurt knew it wasn't Jack's fault that he couldn't seem to get a pet. They were angry at circumstances outside their control.
"There's other things."
"Huh?" Jack pulls himself from his thoughts.
"You don't have to do it. Once Jay has had two or so heats, you'll know his cycle. There are places you can take him. Good, clean, healthy places. Trained professionals. Pick him up, drop him off." Kurt just shrugs. "Like I said, not everyone can do it."
Jack nods slowly, still a bit lost in his own head.
"Guess I should head out." Kurt gets to his feet.
"Oh. Here," Jack gets up and leads Kurt to the door. "Thanks for stopping in man. It really was bothering Jay alot."
"Yeah. Of course. And I'm still suppose to come in next week?" The read asks as he puts his coat back on.
"Yeah. Don't see why not." Jack smiles softly. "See ya."
"Yeah. See you soon Jackson." Kurt touches Jack's wrist before leaving.
