"Do we want to know what it is?" Derek asked as he drove us to the OB/GYN.
Today is the third appointment at Dr. Adam's office. From our last appointment, Derek and I are more than grateful that things are going well with the baby. We finally reached end of the third trimester and we get to find out the gender of the baby today. It has been a huge debate in my mind, mainly because I'm not sure if I want it to be a surprise or not. Nevertheless, I'm just really excited to see our little angel again on the black and white screen today.
"Well, you better choose today, girl, because today's the day where we can know what we're having or not." The auburn haired boy said.
"I know, I know!" I said. I'm so indecisive, maybe I can use his wish as a way to know what I want. "Well, what do you want?"
"I prefer to know, however I am fine with whatever you want to do." He said as he took a right to the medical parking lot.
Of course he would say that. He has his own opinion, but wouldn't mind if I think the opposite and that's perfectly fine. But since I asked for what he desires for, I guess it's only right to go along with it.
"I mean if that's your choice, then we'll find out." I said.
"Honestly, I don't care either way, so we can just save it for birth, if you want to." Derek said.
"I promise I'll tell you once we're in there." I said.
It's not like I have a choice anyway.
My boyfriend and I linked arms once got out of the car, once he parked it. We waited in the doctor's office for about fifteen minutes, before they called us into the room the first day we came here. After I had my routinely check up, Nurse Adele came in to perform the ultrasound as she has in previous visits.
"There's your baby." Nurse Adele said, looking at the black and white image on the screen.
Placing my red manicured on the screen, I couldn't help, but smile at the growing infant. It has definitely blossomed more since the last visit. It's the closest way I can touch him or her until December.
"Hey baby." I whispered to the screen, wondering if he or she could hear me.
I may look ridiculous for doing this, but that's the least of my concern. I communicate with the baby every single day when no one is looking. It's a soothing feeling to know that someone else is present in the room with me. Even if they're not born yet. But it is rare that I see the fetus, so I am taking full of advantage of the opportunity of talking to it's forming face.
"Would you like to know the gender of the baby?" The nurse asked, kindly.
This is it, the moment of truth. It was at that very point that I finally formed my answer in my head. While I am weighing Derek's in my head, but I figure we're both perfectly capable of waiting at least six more months to find out if we're having a boy or girl.
"You know what," I finally peeled my eyes off the screen and to send my boyfriend a mental message. He shrugged, helping me move forward with my decision and turn to nurse. "No thank you, I would like to keep it a surprise."
I felt the hair at the back of my neck rise as little goosebumps form on my caramel skin at my remark. The feeling of being unsure overshadows me, but I wasn't going to take back my response. Somehow I knew I was doing what was right for me and the baby.
After the Nurse cleaned the goo off of me and we scheduled our next appointment at the front, Derek and I headed to his car to go home.
"Are you sure you want to keep it a surprise?" The Italian boy asked to make sure I'm not doing that I regret.
"I'm positive. Besides, if I wanted to know, I can always know next time. But I am positive when I say I want to wait until birth." I said, looking at the window.
"So how are we going to prepare for when the baby comes?" He asked.
"Don't worry, baby. I got a plan." I said with a smile on my face, noticing his brown eyes soften at those words.
