My eyes shot open at three in the morning as Danny screamed throughout the entire house. I got up from the warm, comfort of my bed to go into the nursery and get my baby. I sat down on the rocking chair in the darkness of Danny's room as I let him suck at my breast. I felt strange amount of comfort from this feeding and with sleep still on my mind, I would have past out, if only Derek did not come in and flipped the switch, making me wince at the sudden brightness.
"Ugh, are you the devil?" I groaned, rubbing my eyes.
It stings.
He chuckled at my remark as he kneeled besides me, "No, I am the dad and I came to see if you need any help."
I looked at my fiance as if he were crazy.
"You see, I would love help, but as you can see this is kind of not your job." I said, pointing to our son as he continued to eat from my body.
Derek looked at him and nodded his head, "Fair enough."
"Listen, I know you love him and you want to help me out during this delicate time, and that's very sweet of you, but you're going have to hold off for a while. If you want to help, help me in the morning, but in terms of feeding the little guy, it's mostly my job to take care him for the first few weeks. We can try to take turns after that. Deal?"
Derek looked at me with a grin on his face. "Deal. I just feel bad making you do this on your own."
"Well, don't. It's not anyone's fault at this point. I wouldn't want anything other than this." I said, smiling back at him.
"I guess I'll just go back to bed then." He said, slowly getting up to his feet.
"Okay." I responded.
"Call me if you need anything." He reminded me.
"I will." I said, smiling, hoping that he knows that I appreciated him.
He smiled back as he shut the door behind him. I sighed as I looked down at the infant as he continued to suck the milk out of me. His Derek's matching eyes looks up at me through his tiny slits, observing the world around him.
"You're so lucky to have him as a dad, don't you know?" I told him as if he were going to answer to that rhetorical question.
He just continued to eat. After a few more minutes of observing the child's motive, I decided to kill time by singing to him.
"Hey, baby, don't you cry,
Everything will be alright
So please calm down as I sing you this lullaby
Tonight.
I can assure you, my dear,
Everything will be alright here.
So please don't be scare,
Because I'm right here.
Let me sing you this soothing song,
As you try to hold on strong.
Nothing will go wrong,
Just as long as you're in my arms,
I will protect with my love.
Don't you fret,
Because I bet
When the sun shines tomorrow,
You'll be full of butterflies and rainbows.
Go to sleep,
You'll be at peace.
No more tears running down your face,
You'll be great.
Because kiddo,
You'll be laughing as the sun shines tomorrow.
I love you,
Forever and always.
Good night, baby."
Once Danny was done eating, I burped and changed him. Once I settled him in his empty, white mattress bed, I turned on the Winnie The Pooh mobile and watched as the toys spinned a tune around him. I watched as the machine aid him to sleep.
"Night Daniel." I whispered, before settling a kiss on his forehead.
