"Ember wake up! You've got a big day." My mom entered the room loudly, opening the blinds and turning on the lights.
"Mom..." I muttered, rubbing my eyes, "it's only 8:30...why can't I sleep longer?"
"Ember cmon, you're going to beacon today. You gotta get ready, you can't be lazy today."
"Uuugghh," I moaned, "fine..." I rolled out of my bed onto the floor. I pushed myself and got up slowly, rubbing my eyes and trying to control my hair, but to no avail. Eventually I just decided to let my hair do whatever it wanted.
I walked downstairs to find my mom had made a complete breakfast for me.
"Thanks mom..." I said tiredly with a smile. I gave her a quick hug and started to grab food. I was starving, well I was always starving, but I was more starving than usual. I devoured a lot of food, but I left some for hazel and the rest of my family.
Once I was done I changed out of my pajamas and put them in my suitcase, and more importantly, managed to get my hair down. I grabbed Ignis and Aestus and let them hang on my belt holster on my sides. I grabbed my old red, orange, and yellow backpack and put some of my extra stuff in it. I rolled up my achieve men poster and put in there, as well as some of my hoodies I wore on occasion.
By the time I was ready to go it was only 11, so I made a quick sandwich and went over to see Rose. I gave my family hugs and kisses before I left, and I said my goodbyes. I told hazel to stay safe because I usually keep her out of trouble, but usually it's only school troubles.
I opened the door and for once I wasn't met by cold, or relatively cold, air. It was sunny out, so it was around 75 degrees, and my
semblance had no problem with that. I walked over to Rose's house excitedly with a pep in my step.
I knocked on her door and she opened it shortly after. I smiled and stepped in without being invited in cause I knew I was always welcome in her house.
"How close are you to finishing your packing?" I asked her as I leaned against the wall.
"I just had to grab thorn, then i was gonna go into the coffee shop in downtown. Wanna come?"
"Sure...my mom woke me up at 8:30, so I'm gonna need it."
"Just give me a minute then, I need to say goodbye and grab thorn." SHe rushed up the stairs to her room and came back down a couple of minutes later with thorn around her torso.
"Well, moms crying so let's go." She said nonchalantly.
"She's gonna miss us isn't she? It'll be way too empty without us in there, at least my parents have hazel."
"Yeah, I'll still call her though, so she'll be fine, now cmon I need caffeine." She ushered me out the door and smiled once she stepped outside.
Rose and I started walking to downtown vale, and we were both happy and peppy. We sat down at a high table and got coffees. Even though it was almost noon, we still got them.
I noticed a pubescent 14 or 15 year old boy checking me out. Normally I wouldn't mind, but he was the definition of the nerdy look, and he was 3 years younger than me. I didn't want to be rude, but I tried ignoring him regardless.
"Looks like you have a shadow..." Rose said giggling, mentioning the kid.
"Shut up!" I whispered desperately, "he'll take that as an invitation to Come over here..." I tried casually hiding my face from him, but I doubt that worked.
Rose laughed at my embarrassment. "You can't stop true love." She teased, slightly pushing my shoulder.
"Please stop..." I said with an embarrassed laugh, and I heard a chair squeak as somebody got up. "Oh god..." I continued, "it's him isn't it...?"
I moved my eyes up to a grinning Rose and I sighed deeply.
"H-hey," I heard a higher pitched male voice to my left, so I turned and forced a smile. "I uhhh..." He laughed nervously, "I-I think That you're really...pretty..."
I gave him a smile. "Thanks kid, but I don't know how to tell you this," I gestured my head at Rose, "but she's my girlfriend of 3 years...sorry..."
I felt bad as I watched his face fall. I grabbed my cup of coffee and swung my bag onto my back. I Ruffled his hair and gave him a sympathetic smile.
"Sorry kid," I said, waving bye as I left, "better luck next time." I grabbed Rose's hand and dragged her along to make it more convincing.
"Well that happened..." Rose said once we were far away. She slipped her hand from mine, and I didn't even realize I was still holding it.
"Yeah...I feel kinda bad about it, but on the other hand, I just couldn't give him an actual rejection." I shrugged and held my hands at my backpack strap.
"Yeah, but seriously, if there was a book written about our life, how many people would ship us?" She asked with a giggle.
"Everybody who read the book obviously," I answered, "we'd make an amazing couple." I giggled at my answer.
Rose looked over at me with a smile, "exactly what i thought," she said shoving me softly, "and if I was gay, I'd 100% date you."
"Same." I said with a laugh as I gave her a wink. Rose and I arrived at the airship pickup, and even though we were 20 minutes early, the place was loaded with new students. Rose and I got stuck in the back of the crowd, and that was a problem because I saw a really cute guy up front.
"We're almost there!" Rose said excitedly, nudging me slightly, "and who knows, maybe we could finally get boyfriends." She turned and gave me a wink.
"Well that's what I'm hoping for," I said with a shrug, "I don't wanna sound cliche, but still..."
"Yeah I know," she said with a smile, "it's what we're all hoping for. Meet some men and become a huntress."
Just then the Airbus arrived and we loaded on. As soon I stepped on I was blasted with chilly air conditioner on high.
"Oh this'll be fun," I said, already shaking a little bit, and to make things worse, I was stuck under an AC vent because we were in the back. I sat down with Rose next to me and rubbed my arms.
"It's not that long of a ride,"
Rose reassured, "and it'll be warm when we get out."
"Yeah, but still, it'll feel like forever." I said sighing, holding my hands between my thighs. I was shaking them back and forth too. I looked up and saw that guy I saw earlier looking at me, so I gave him a quick smile, but he looked away embarrassed. Rose saw and grinned.
"What you're not a lesbian now?" She asked jokingly with a laugh.
"Oh shut up," I said, pushing her, "I was trying to be nice."
"Whatever you say Em," she said with a shrug. I noticed the guy nervously looking at me again, but I didn't acknowledge him because I didn't want him to go away again.
The person to my right conveniently got up to look out the window. I looked up at him and gave him a friendly smile, inviting him to come over next to me. I smiled at Rose as I watched him get up. He walked up to me, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. He tripped over himself and fell down kinda hard. I gasped and moved my hand up to my mouth. I quickly ran up next to him and knelt by him. Somehow me and Rose were the only ones who noticed.
"Oh my god," I exclaimed, whispering in his ear, crouching next to him, "are you alright?" I helped him back up on his feet and walked him over to where I was sitting.
"Yeah..." He said, looking up at me with a blush. "Great first impression though..." He sounded kind of disappointed, but he played it off with an embarrassed laugh.
I gave him a sweet smile and giggled. "You're fine," I said sitting down next to him, "we all get tripped up every once and awhile...just don't do that when fighting Grimm." I moved my hands back in between my thighs.
"Yeah I'll try not to..." He said with a half forced smile, "but you okay? You seem really cold, like, unnaturally cold..."
"Yeah I'm fine," I said with a sigh, "my body, or my semblance, really dislikes anything that's not warm. Like above 70 degrees warm."
"Oh that must suck a lot during winter." He said with a sympathetic tone.
"Oh believe me, it does," I said looking up at him. "I'm Ember by the way, and that's my friend Rose." Rose smiled at him and waved.
"Her name is kinda fitting, given everything she's got going on." Rose chimed in, motioning to my body and colors of choice. I gave her a quick sarcastic smile and turned back to the boy.
"I'm ash." He said with a smile. "You know, maybe we're supposed to be friends, Ember and Ash. Fire and more fire?" He gave a nervous laugh.
I giggled softly and smiled at him. "Yeah maybe..." I said with a shrug, still slightly shivering. Just then most of the students got up to look out the window. Rose, Ash and I got up to try and look. Ash had to go back to hang with his friends, but I giggled as Rose tried to see through the wall that formed.
"I've got you," I said to Rose as I grabbed her around the waste and lifted her up a couple of inches.
"Thanks..." She replied, a little displeased. "This isn't weird at all..."
"Oh shut up," I retorted, "you wanna see the view or not?"
"Fine," she said with a joking pout, "but it's a really beautiful view?"
"Yeah it is, and do you know what else is beautiful?" I asked.
"Ash over there?" She teased, poking me in the rib.
"No, well yes." I said with a blush, "but I was gonna say me."
"You're a very pretty flaming princess." She said, and I put her down. I gave a curtesy and giggled softly. Just then the news on the projection screen got interrupted by a lady who I assumed was one of the professors.
"Who's that?" I overheard a girl ask, breaking the silence. She had very long blonde hair.
"My name is Glynda Goodwitch. You have had the honor of being selected to this prestigious academy," the lady said, "our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace, and as future huntsman and huntresses, it is your duty to uphold it." I tuned out the rest because it just seemed like an overdone welcome speech, and I was too lazy to listen, I rode the rest of the trip in leisure.
