I woke up face to face with Rose. She was still asleep, but her hair covered my face, so I pushed it off and sat up and stretched. The sun was shining right through the window. I got off the bed and straightened out my clothes by habit. I looked in the mirror and fixed my hair as much as I could with my hands.
I grabbed a pillow and threw it softly at Rose. "Wake up sleepy..." I said as it hit her. She sat up fast and looked at me with wide eyes.
"Did you just throw a pillow at me? Again?" She asked, rubbing her eyes with a yawn.
"You wanna fight about it?" I said jokingly, "but seriously get up, I want food."
Rose grinned and rolled out of the bed, kind of falling off, but kind of catching herself. She popped up with a smile and waved me along to the door. She opened it and practically shoved me through.
"Well alright girl I'm going." I said laughing softly and throwing my hands up. I missed a step so I slid down the staircase on my butt. That drew a laugh out of both Rose and I.
"You two okay?" Rose's dad said, poking his head around the corner.
"Yeah we're fine...I think..." I said, collecting myself. I smiled at her dad so he would go back to doing what he was doing. He pulled his head back around the corner and Rose helped me up. She walked us into the kitchen and grabbed a box of pumpkin Petes marshmallow flakes. She looked at Pyrrha on the cover and shook her head.
"It's weird that she's the same age us as," she said in disbelief, "she's done so much more than us."
"I mean, I beat you in the finals of that small practice tournament..." I shrugged cockily and nonchalantly.
"Oh cmon!" She protested, "it was a tie!"
"Nah," I said cockily with a grin, "I got you down first."
"Whatever," she replied, rolling her eyes. "Just eat your cereal." She slid me a bowl and gave me a spoon. I grinned at her and slid the spoon in my mouth. The news channel was doing a story about the new students being accepted into the academies; all the big talk was about Pyrrha Nikos.
"You'd think the entire class is just Pyrrha by how much they talk about her." I said between bites.
"Yeah but we're the little hidden gems," Rose said happily, "soon they'll be talking about us, winning the vytal festival tournament, or 'tying' again." She put air quotes around tying.
"Yeah...a tie," I said winking at her, drinking down the milk left in the bowl. I got up and put the empty bowl in the sink.
"Hey rose? I gotta head back home. I'll see you around though." I put my shoes on and opened the door, and immediately got hit with a cold wind.
"Nevermind..." I said closing the door and turning to Rose. "Do you have a not tiny jacket I can borrow?"
"Cmon Em," she said getting up and walking to a closet, "it's not even cold outside..." She handed me an old jacket that looked like it'd fit me.
"Rose...my name is ember..." I said, "my body literally thrives off of heat..."
"So?" She replied, "what does your semblance have to do with anything?"
"You've never noticed how I'm always cold when it's below 65 degrees?" I asked.
"No, well I mean kinda I guess. Does your semblance really do that?"
"Yeah, I'm susceptible to cold...kinda sucks, but hey, it's nice when there's a fire around me"
"Yeah if there's a fire around you, let's hope I'm not around you."
"Whatever," I said throwing the jacket around my back and putting my arms through the sleeves, "I'll see you on the airships if I don't see you earlier."
"By Em." She said, leaning in to give me a goodbye hug. I hugged her back and waved bye to her parents as I stepped out the door.
I would've taken my time walking back to my house, but it was 50 and windy, and with my semblance, that wasn't fun. I hurried home and wrapped myself tight in the jacket when I got inside.
"Semblance giving you trouble again..?" My mom asked me once I got inside. She came over to the thermostat and turned it up slightly.
"You don't need to mom...ill warm up soon." I protested. I felt bad, my parents had spent so much lien off of heating for me, plus they almost always had to wear light clothes, and I didn't want them to go any less than they already were.
"Please listen to her!" Hazel called from upstairs in her room. "I'm dying up here."
"I'll be fine," I said, turning down the thermostat and tightening the jacket around me, "I can just use a blanket or something..."
"Alright fine," she said, throwing her hands up, "just holler if you get cold."
I went up to room and said hi to hazel, who smiled and waved me off. I walked into my room and walked over to the closet, grabbing Ignis and Aestus, my two bladed Tonfa. I extended them and grinned, but it dropped when I noticed the flame paint was chipped. I folded part of the blade inward on the Long side to create a handle I could use to hold them like Kamas, the chips in the paint were a lot less noticeable in that form.
I folded them back up and set them next to my suitcase. I went back to the closet and accidentally knocked a scrapbook down. I picked it up and opened it, smiling widely once I saw the pictures.
The first picture was of a 4 year old me holding a baby hazel. She barely fit in my lap, but I managed to hold her. I had the widest smile in my face in the picture. I looked over at the next page, and smiled even wider. It was a picture of 12 year old Rose and I with wooden versions of our weapons.
I remembered that day like it was yesterday. The signal teachers had us test what we liked with light, wooden versions of weapon types. Rose immediately went for the bow, and she was a natural great shot, and when they tested our reaction times, she was almost flawless. That would be the work of her semblance. She can almost slow down time, not literally, but she sees things slower sometimes, almost like an adrenaline high. When she shot She didn't hit exactly on the bullseye, but she hit close enough for it to count.
I had more struggles, none of the light weapons fit right with me, and the heavy ones were too heavy for me. I tried a two swords, and I just couldn't swipe properly, and I kept losing my grip. I looked over at a giant axe, but I couldn't even pick the thing up. There was a staff but I kept hitting myself in the shin with it. Rose likes to remind me of when I tried the bow. When I tried the arrow went almost straight into the ground. Eventually I broke down in frustration. I sat down against the wall, crying in anger. I suddenly felt a wooden stick poking me. I looked up and Rose was holding wooden Tonfas. She pulled me up and dragged me over to one of the dummies. One of the teachers gave me quick instruction on how to use them. Everything after that came naturally. It came so naturally that I almost decapitated a dummy. I remember apologizing to one of the teachers, but the teacher was grinning and slowly clapping. He asked my name and I told him, he told me he was excited to see Me in his class. That night me and Rose went out and got huge stomach aches after eating a bunch of ice cream, but it was worth it.
I got pulled back to reality by hazel knocking on my door.
"Can you help me get a book off the top shelf?" She asked. Although she was 4 years younger than Rose, she was just as tall.
"Yeah just a second..." I shut the book and put it in my suitcase. Then I got up and walked over to hazels room and got the book for her. I spent the rest of the day listening to music and reading. In some of the shortest hours of my life, it suddenly became 11:00. My mom came up and made me go to bed. After all, the airships left at 1, and I didn't want to miss my ride.
