"Can't we just wait 'til morning to unpack all our stuff?" Rose whined as we all stepped into our assigned dorm. Magnolia silently walked past us all and sat down on the far bed, and she did so somewhat elegantly. She sighed as she sat down.
"Normally I'm against being lazy and all that," she said, "but I agree with Rose here. I just wanna sleep."
Bondi flopped down onto the next bed a little less elegantly.
"I know it's only 9 o clock," she said, "but something about being launched off a cliff and fighting grim seems to take something out of you."
She said it kind of sarcastically so I gave her a quick look. I worked my way over to a bed and delicately laid down on it, and rose jumped into hers slightly like a child.
"Oh thank god," I said, "I would've died a little inside if I had to do anymore work. Glad we feel the same." We all laughed a bit, but it was interrupted by a knock on the door. I opened it up to see Ash standing there. Twirling his thumbs as if he was nervous.
"Hey," he said, "can I steal you for a second?"
"Yeah just a second." I answered. I turned back to wave bye to my team, but I was forced to give Rose a "shut up" look when she winked at me. I turned back to the door and stepped out, shutting it behind me.
"How'd you know what room I was in?" I asked, "were you stalking me?"
He blushed and panicked a bit. He tried to explain himself but he stuttered slightly and the words didn't come out.
"I'm kidding," I giggled, "but seriously, you aren't stalking me right?"
"No," he said, still recovering, "I'm just down the hall and I saw you walk into your room. On accident."
I grinned at him; "I'll believe you, at least for now." I paused and shifted around a bit. "So what did you wanna talk to me about?"
"Oh I uhh- I wanted to congratulate you on being team leader." He sounded like he came up with that on the spot.
"You just wanted to see me didn't you...?"
"Yeah," he admitted and sighed, "it's awkward in my room, we don't know the other two and they don't know us and it's quiet and awkward."
"You better get to know them," I laughed softly, "you're gonna fight with them, if you like living you need to know them. We all know you can't actually protect yourself." I teased.
"Hey I can protect myself just fine. If I fought the toughest guy in the school, I'd win."
"Yeah?" I asked as I kicked out his legs and flipped him over me onto his back. I slowed him down a bit before he hit the ground. I lightly held him down with my knee on his chest. I grinned and winked at him and then I helped him up.
"Too bad you forgot about the strongest girl in the school." I giggled softly and smiled, "well, second...at most."
Ash got up, clearly very flustered, and stuttered slightly, but he recovered quickly.
"I came out to have a good time and honestly I feel so attacked right now."
"Oh Cry me a river." I retorted, but then I laughed it off. I nudged him slightly and he grinned.
"Sorry," I apologized, "I normally don't flip people over my back on day 2, but you kinda made me do it sooooo..." I trailed off and shifted on my feet, trying to look all cute and innocent.
Ash gave me a sigh and a grin. He started to speak but he was cut off by Bronson shouting down the hall: "Hey Ash, stop flirting and come on back, we have things to do."
"I'm not..." Ash started but he trailed off and sighed, "I'll- I'm sorry I'll see you later."
I gave him a smile and said, "you're fine, I'll see you tomorrow."
We turned out separate ways and I walked back into my dorm. As soon as I did, all the girls stared at me and stopped talking. Rose said what they were probably all thinking.
"Okay but what was that thud?" She asked.
"Oh nothing," I said nonchalantly as I crawled into my bed, "I just flipped Ash onto the ground, no big deal."
Rose raised a brow and I grinned as I turned onto my shoulder.
"I don't know about y'all," I said, changing the subject, "but I'm tired, so I'm gonna go to sleep. We have a big day tomorrow."
"Okay mom..." Rose said with a sigh, "if you say so."
We all said our good nights as I turned off the light. I didn't fall asleep immediately, but everybody else did. I eventually lulled myself to sleep, which was a little hard. I was still feeling the first day at beacon high.
I woke up the next morning to the sun smacking me in the face. The sun hadn't really reached the other girls so I was the only one up. I quietly put the clothes I packed away, but I left the photos and posters to another time.
I creeped into our bathroom to change into cleaner clothes and straighten out my hair with my brush. I stepped out of the bathroom and start to go out to the hall but a whisper stopped me.
"Where do you think you're going?" Bondi says softly.
"To the cafeteria," I answer quietly, "to get some breakfast before class. You wanna come with?"
"Sure why not, I'll be out in a minute."
I stepped outside the room and leaned against the wall. Bondi came out moments later dressed in her simple blue jacket and jeans, but she didn't have her goggles around her head.
"Actually," I started, "do you wanna go into town and get some food? I have the feeling the food'll be better there."
"Sure, why not?" She said with a carefree shrug. "We have the time...even so, it's the first day. How hard can it be?"
I laughed and spoke softly, "I mean it is THE Beacon Academy, I'd imagine they'd throw us into the fire."
"They already kind of have..." Bondi said, trailing off slightly. She snapped back to attention. "I mean it's not like they threw us into a Grimm infested forest or anything."
"They didn't," I said, "they launched us into it." I laughed at my stupid jokes and Bondi just sighed in disappointment.
"I-You know what I mea-" Bondi was cut off by a loud crash coming from the dust shop near us.
We turned around in silence and gave each other a quick look of confusion. I started toward the noise, but Bondi put her arm out to stop me.
"Wait what are you doing?" She said, trying to slow me, "there could be some bad things going on in there..."
"I'll be fine, the owner probably just dropped something," I replied nonchalantly, "I'll only be gone a couple of minutes..." Bondi sighed, she must've knew she couldn't stop me.
"I'll be waiting out here," she said as I walked away, "and don't leave me waiting, I'm hungry."
I stepped inside of the store only to meet a hostile greeting. Some criminal looking men turned towards me, and before anything else could happen one of them brought their sword down from up high.
I followed my instincts and put my arms up in an X to block it, but I didn't have my weapons, so the blade hit my right on my skin. I screamed and backed down onto the ground.
"Wow this ones dumb...lucky she has her Aura..." He said with a cocky laugh, "what should I do with her boss?"
As the men were talking I noticed the shopkeeper looking at me straight in the eyes. I wasn't sure if he wanted my sympathy or help, or If he was sorry that I ended up here, but either way I wanted to help. I could probably beat these guys, it was just a matter of weapons.
"Just throw her in the corner, I'll deal with her afterwards." Said a voice from deep in the back of the store. Just hearing his voice made me feel like he demanded respect, but he didn't deserve it.
"Alright boss." He said as he towered over me. He bent over to pick me up, so I used that opportunity to fight back. I kicked my legs up and wrapped them around his head. I brought him down and he fell into a wooden chair. The chair shattered into different pieces under the weight of the man. I pushed myself up and kicked the man.
I reached down for Ignis and Aestus, but I left them back in the dorm. I barely had time to react as another man swung at me. I ducked underneath as I picked two legs from the chair to defend myself.
I stood back up as the man regained his balance. He shortly lost it again as I struck him across the face with both legs of the chair. He spun to the ground on top of other man. Fortunately I wasn't like 12 year old me, and I learned how to fight with other weapons.
The third man was easy. I moved towards him and spun, and as I spun I hit him across the stomach. As he bent over I brought my knee up to his head. I brought the table legs to his chest as my knee forced him back up. He fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
"Why do I have to do everything myself?" Groaned a large man, who sounded like the boss, as he turned the corner from the backroom. He was holding a duffel bag of what was either money or dust and a giant club. He was wearing a simple outfit. Jeans and a tight sleeveless shirt that showed off his muscles, and more importantly, a white fang mask.
I had to swallow my fear. I slowly approached the man as he approached me. I swung at him but he leaned back for a dodge. He poked me away with his club and forced my back to the window. I went to strike high again, but the man swung his club at me like a bat. It hit me square in the stomach and sent me through the window into the street.
"Ember!" I heard Bondi yell in surprise as she came up to my side. I ached everywhere on my insides, so it made it hard to move. I noticed the man run out of the new opening. Bondi turned and went after him.
The shopkeeper slowly came out from behind the counter and outside the store. He offered me his shoulder to help me up. As soon as I fully stood up I saw the man jump over the railing into the harbor, and Bondi leaning on the railing, panting heavily.
"Sorry about your store..." I said with a soft, nervous, laugh.
"No no no, it's fine. Thank you, very much. I can't thank you enough, but please, come inside, the police are on their way." He replied, sounding grateful, even with the broken window I just created.
"Yeah I better stay." I said as he helped me inside. I gave Bondi a "come here" wave as she walked back, "the police'll want my story."
