Cassandra's POV:
She was sprawled across one of the couches by the TV while she watched Michael and Reagan play video games together. She had only known them a little while but she trusted them. She had a feeling she would become better friends with them soon.
They were total opposites but Cassandra and Reagan had become almost immediate friends. They talked without feeling shy or uncomfortable. Cassandra missed having another girl to talk to. She had Isaac but it just wasn't the same.
Her thoughts were interrupted as Michael and Reagan began giggling and whispering to each other. She knew where this was going. The couple got up, holding hands they made there way to the storage closet at the end of the hall.
Cassandra sighed. Reagan was a good friend and she was glad that she had found someone like Michael. Cassandra turned on the TV and began watching her favourite show, Hereos. She turned the volume up.
The rest of the group was in the kitchen trying to figure out what was going on in the outside world. She listened to the conversation in the kitchen and she heard Alaina mention making a cake to cheer everyone up. Most times she would be happy to hear that she would get cake. With Alaina, she knew better. Alaina couldn't cook at all. They were lucky if she didn't light the kitchen on fire. She can barely make toast.
They used to pretend the food was great until she decided to cook all the time. Then they had to tell her the truth so they didn't die of food poisoning.
Cassandra switched from Netflix to regular TV and shrieked in horror. The others came running with Reagan and Michael trailed disappointedly behind. Michael's hair was kinda messy.
They all said nothing as the news anchor spoke.
"The police continue their investigation on the murder of everyone in the city's science labs. Some are still missing but evidence leads us to believe they were injured due to traces of blood matching their DNA. More on this later."
Luke and Alaina glanced at each other and it wasn't hard to tell why. It could have been them. They could have been the ones in the photos. The photos of bodies with severed limbs and sliced open stomachs. They could have had their heads smashed into a bloody ball of flesh like that first photo.
The news anchor continued as they switched their focus back to the television.
"Other news, a hunting group finds one of their friends five hours later, covered in suspicious bite marks. He seems to have forgotten who is and tried to eat the hunting group when they found him. He is under surveillance in the North End Hospital. More on this story tonight."
The news ended and a commercial about Oreos came on. The television blasted the little song as everyone took the time to connect the dots. It was happening. They had prepared but there was still doubt in her mind. Only Luke and Alaina had actually witnessed a zombie killing.
Now it was real. No more dreaming. No more chances to wake up from the nightmare.
