Using stones in magic is as old as time itself. Even the earliest humans sensed a mystical energy or force trapped within them. Their solidity, weight and inherent strength inspired a belief in their magical efficacy. First used as amulets to deflect negative forces, then as carvings to gods, offered as a sacrifice, and buried for blessings and fertility entreaties. Their use is interwoven in various religions, rituals and magic around the world.

The most popular example of ancient stone magic would be Stonehenge.

Other examples of stone magic are the Mirror Stones of South America. These stones were polished and made almost reflexive. It was believed that a reflection of the face of death would be shown to anyone whose death was imminent.

Stone wells are often thought to grant wishes and heal the sick, and are abodes of ancient deities.

Here are a few simple spells using only stones found in nature at the time of the spellcraft.

Protection Pebbles
Find a flowing stream of water and stand within it. While thinking of the positive forces of protection and your need for it, remove five small pebbles from the streambed. Close your hand with the pebbles in your palm and visualize beaming lights of positive protection. Allow the stones to absorb your intentions and they will help strengthen your protective energy shield, as long as you carry them with you. You can fold them in a piece of clothe, put them in a small pouch, or make a piece of jewelry with them.

Yes or No
When seeking a simple answer to a yes or no question, gather several stones of both the light and dark variety. Hold them in your hands as you ponder your inquiry. Then, with your eyes closed, place the stones in front of you on the ground. With your left hand pick a stone. If it's a light coloured stone the answer is no, if it's a dark coloured stone the answer is yes.

Night Protection
If you ever feel that danger is near when walking alone at night, fortify your protective energies by picking up a small stone and holding it in a closed fist. Visualize yourself as the stone; strong, hard, durable. Once you feel you've absorbed all the energies you can from the stone, if you can drop it next to a tree, if not, a garden or a piece of grass or field will suffice.

Live Long and Prosper
To ensure your year is one of fulfillment, joy and luck, collect the largest stone you can find at sunrise on New Years Day. Take it home and put it somewhere it will really standout. If it remains the year, your life and home will prosper. Make sure you replace the stone each year.

Potent Power
To create a stronger connection to the powers of the universe while spellcrafting, collect up to twenty small round stones and imbue them with your energy. Before your ritual or craft, take each stone in your hand and declare it. For example, 'this is a stone of strength,' or 'this is a stone of light' or 'this is a stone of courage.' Place the stones in a circle around your altar or where you are performing the spell. Keep in mind, the stones will attract more energies outside.
