Chapter One☼
July 3rd, 60 days till September...
My mom pulled into the driveway of her beach house and turned back to look at me, "What do you think?"
"It looks gorgeous," I breathed out speechless.
The view was amazing. The sun was setting, casting its rays over the water making it look a pinky-orange color.
"This summer is going to be amazing" I thought smiling as I made my way out of the car.
"How have things been with your dad?" she asked grabbing two glasses from the cabinet and filing them with lemonade.
"Pretty good," I replied shrugging, "He's working most of the time though so I'm alone most of the time."
She nodded understandingly and turned her back to me, cutting up some fruit.
That was one of the reasons my parents had gotten divorced. My dad was constantly working and didn't have enough time for her. That and they weren't happy together. They were better on their own.
"You glad schools out?" she asked and I nodded, "It will be nice to have a break. I'm gonna miss my friends though."
"Maybe you can invite some of them down here for a week sometime this summer," she replied then grimaced, "As long as they don't trash the house."
I laughed and shook my head, "If I invited anyone down it would most likely be Grace. But she's working so it probably wouldn't work out anyway."
She nodded, "Well the people around here are friendly. I'm sure you'll make some friends."
I glanced out at the beach longingly, then looked at her hopefully, "Any chance you'd let me go out for a quick walk?"
She looked at me curiously, "Why?"
"The sunset is beautiful and I'd like to take some pictures of it," I replied hoping it'd be a good enough reason for her.
"I guess so," she replied looking deep in thought, "But not for too long. It's been a long day and you still need to unpack. It wouldn't be a bad idea to call your dad either."
"Okay, thank you!" I called out to her running into the living room to grab my backpack. I quickly unzipped it and grabbed my camera from its safe spot wrapped in my sweatshirt to keep it from getting damaged. I slipped my flip flops off and walked over to the side door, then slid it open. I couldn't help but let a smile break out across my face taking in the sweet smell of the air.
"Hello paradise," I whispered and took a step outside.
I was amazed again by the sight. The sun had almost fully set, and I decided to come back out tomorrow evening and get some better pictures. I snapped a few quickly and began walking down a little closer to see if there were any pretty shells. I spotted the pier a few blocks or so down, but decided against walking all the way down there. I could explore the area more the next day.
I also spotted some people at a campfire about 10 yards or so away. They looked to be about my age, with some looking a year or two older. Three of them were throwing a football or something around.
"Matt!" the one called out to one of the others, "Go long!" He started backing up pretty far and stopped about four or so yards away from me.
I watched them curiously as the one threw it towards the Matt guy. It went over his head and he reached up to grab it but it went through his hands, landing about two feet away from him. He reached down to pick it up, but when he was getting up he glanced over my way. His gaze came up to my face as we locked eyes, my blue-green staring into his dark brown.
"Matt!" a guy called out breaking the moment. I looked away and started back up towards the house, glancing over my shoulder through my reddish-brown hair and saw the guy jogging back over to his friends. He glanced up me quickly though and smiled, making me turn away blushing.
I slipped inside, biting my lip trying to keep a smile off my face.
I found my thoughts drifting to the guy, wondering how old he was and if he lived in the area.
"Matt," I whispered smiling liking the sound of his name.
I headed upstairs and set my camera on the desk. I spotted my suitcase on my bed and figured my mom must have set it on my bed. I grabbed out some clothing to sleep in and quickly changed into it. Then brushed my teeth and splashed some water on my face. I looked in the mirror to see my eyes bright and shiny looking.
A smile broke out onto face and I shook my head trying to get the thoughts of him out of my head.
I slipped into bed and sighed. I'd never called my dad. I glanced at the clock and saw it was 10. He had to get up at 5:00 and would've been in bed by now.
I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and quickly pulled up a new message, "Hey dad it's Em (: Just wanted to let you know I got here safely. I'll try to call you sometime tomorrow. Love Emily"
I was about to hit send but then added on, "P.S. I miss you".
I placed my phone back on the nightstand and switched the light off, moving around a bit. I was exhausted from the whole day so it didn't take that long for me to start drifting off to sleep. Dreaming happily of what the summer might bring.
