My stories have never been the ones that get very many votes, but this is incredible! Thanks again. Now here's the story...
Sophie had always been an outsider. Always have, always will. First it was with her telepathy. Then it was with her having too many abilities. She wished she could get a break, be normal for once. Well, at least as normal a 14 year old elf can get.
When Sophie was in the Forbidden Cities (the human world), she fell into a haze of depression. It's hard enough being a teenager, but dealing with people's thoughts and what they thought of her was confidence plummeting. But she couldn't do anything about except pray and pray she'll find someone like her. That she can finally belong somewhere, like any person wanted.
Then Fitz Vacker came along. He was like someone out of a dream and he had flaws, like any elf. But he was there when she needed him, and that was all she wanted in a friend.
"Sophie," Fitz said, interrupting her thoughts. He sat across from her, his teal eyes filled with curiousness.
"Hm?" Sophie replied, clearing her head. She reminded herself that she couldn't think about him like that, he was only her friend. But the practice Sir Teirgen had assigned them couldn't let any untold secrets by the end of it. Sophie got sweaty hands just thinking about it. She needed to sort out her feelings for Fitz, because if she didn't, they might not be Cognates and that would crush him.
"Let's get started," Fitz said, meeting her eyes.
"Okay," she whispered in a small voice.
She relaxed her mind, trying to sense Fitz slipping into her mind. Nope.
Okay I'm in, Sophie, Fitz transmitted.
What now? Sophie thought.
Um, I think we're supposed to answer these questions, Fitz held up a notebook, I'll go first... Um, what is the first word that comes to mind when I ask, what was it like before the Lost Cities?
Lonely, Sophie thought automatically. A memory of one time she was in class and the teacher singled her out, her face half covered by her blonde hair, shrinking in the stare of her classmates. Another was when she got home one day and she was crying because of the teases bullies called her. She pushed the thoughts out of her kind before Fitz could see anymore.
Oh... I'm sorry, Sophie... I didn't know, Fitz apologized in a small voice. This was a bad idea, let's do something else... Um let's see-
It's okay Fitz. It's better you see what I really think, it'll help us become Cognates sooner, Sophie smiled sadly.
Okay. Let's go to the next one... What's the first word that comes to mind when you think of me? Fitz asked.
Cute, Sophie's brain said. She blushed bright red, looking at her hands and the cleared her throat even though she wasn't going to speak. Um, is that really one of the questions?
Yeah, Fitz said with a far away look in his eyes. His cheeks were red and his hands were tightly woven together.
What about me? Sophie asked after and awkward amount of time passed.
Brave.
Really?
Yeah. You can do anything and everything perfectly, like you were born to do it. Which you probably were. But more importantly, you fight for what you believe in... And not very one can do that, Sophie.
Thanks, I guess...
Fits smiled a movie star smile, that suddenly turned slightly wicked. You really think I'm cute?
Shut up... Sophie blushed, looking at her hands. She decided to go on about this a different way. I mean look at you, Mr. Perfect with even his looks. Don't even get me started on your abilities!
You didn't answer my question.
Ugh, you're impossible. Yeah. Okay? You're pretty handsome!
You said cute last time.
Oh my gosh! It's a compliment! Just take it and let it be!
Well for the record... You're pretty cute yourself.
Sophie then stood up, firetruck red from blushing so hard. Fitz laughed and covered his face with his hands. He then doubled over from laughing so hard.
"Sir Tiergen," Sophie said in a strained voice, covering her face with her hair. "Can you excuse Fitz and I for a moment?"
"Actually, I think Ill leave... This looks like you guys need some privacy..." Tiergen said, looking like he wanted it smile but fought against it. He then walked out, shutting the door behind him.
Sophie stood staring at the closed door, trying to ignore Fitz laughing from across the table. "Fitz..." she warned.
"We can do it out loud now," he said once he contained himself.
"Well... Ask a question then," Sophie said, sitting slowly back down.
"Hmm," he said looking at his book. "No. I want to ask you something."
Sophie shifted in her seat, swallowing the lump in her throat. "Go ahead."
"What do you want to achieve, after all of this?"
"What?"
"You heard me."
"Um... I don't understand, Fitz."
"What do you want to be after everything is over. Like the Neverseen doesn't exist anymore and the Black Swan is done. What do you want to be?"
"I want to be normal," Sophie said after a while. She'd been an outsider her entire life, even after she came to the elf world.
"Define normal," Fitz asked, putting his chin in his hands.
"I want to... I don't know... Belong somewhere without being an outsider, I guess." Sophie mumbled.
"You do."
But when Sophie looked up Fitz was a lot closer than he was before. He wasn't even on the other side of the table, no, he was right in front of her, with two noticeable hands on the armrests. Her heart skipped a beat.
"I'm never going to belong anywhere, Fitz. That's just how it is. I'll never be who I want to be," Sophie said quietly, not quite meeting his eyes, instead looking at his nose.
"No. That's not what's going to happen," Fitz said, leaning closer, until she could feel his breath on her cheek. "You deserve a happy ending, Sophie. After everything you've done for us. For me." He put on finger below her chin and brought her eyes to his teal ones. His hand brushed a lock of hair, tucking it behind her ear, like in the old human movies. "I think it's time to repay you."
Nearly nose to nose, Sophie sorted out her feelings. She decided to be what he called her, brave.
She closed the gap between them, pressing her lips to his. Fitz responded immediately, moving his hands to her waist. She was just about to wrap her arms around him when Sir Tiergan thought this was the best time to come back.
"The bell is about to- oh..." Tiergan started then stopped.
"I swear, he's just like Keefe. Always ruining our moments," Fitz smiled. This time it was better than his usual one, the movie star one, this one was more heart. He looked like he just won the lottery, holding on to Sophie with one arm the other one racking through his dark hair.
"I'm assuming you guys figured everything out...?" Tiergan commented, raising an eyebrow at Sophie, who was grabbing her satchel, hiding behind her hair.
"Yeah... I think a little more than that actually," Fitz replied for her.
"Let's go," Sophie said quietly, taking Fitz by the hand and dragging him out the door.
"What was that about?" Fitz asked.
"He's probably going to tell Mr. Forkle. Then I would have to deal with an extra dad scolding me about boys."
"Hey, you're the one that kissed me!"
"Oh and not a word about this to anyone, and if we're going to take this farther-"
"Oh yeah we are! I'm not letting Sophie Foster kiss me and let her run off!"
"Shut it, Mr. Perfect," Sophie laughed.
"Okay, okay, we'll do it the right way, Sophie. Calm down."
"What you don't have a nickname for me?"
"You are already perfect to me so why would I need to call you anything else?" Fitz smirked, leaning down to peck her on the lips.
"That was the cheeses thing I've ever heard. But it was sweet."
