I kissed his muzzle. Hugged his neck and handed his brand new lead rope to his new owner. She stared at me curious. I smiled a half smile and turned away. She led him into the float. The men lifted the back flap up. The car rolled away. As I turned to leave a heart wrenching whinny came from the vehicle. I fell to the floor gasping. Tears streaked my face. He was gone. Forever. My sobs became worse. I lay there, curled up in a ball. Someone touched my shoulder gently.
"Get away from me!" I yelled heartbroken, "I hate you." I cry into my knees. The rough sand cut into my knees. I lay there. No one came close I cried until the sobs turned into hiccups. The hiccups slowed and I stood up slowly. I walked past the arena, my soul empty.
Staring at the corner I remembered the time when Milk bucked me off to save me from the 'evil' birds. He'd thrown me the turned to face the birds rearing trying to protect me. I felt wetness on my cheeks. With a small smile and millions of tears I took the first step. I went home.
