Alabaster

The soft summer breeze blows swirling up dust in the air carrying the sultry smell of efflorescent figs and mulberries trees planted by the road. A warming sun shines above my head painting a shadowy silhouette that extends on the floor before me. As I saunter down the streets I leave a murmuring trail behind, town-talk curse on my life. A minute before I walked crestfallen, looking with demureness at my new beaded-leather sandals and the yellowish dirt in the tip of my toes. But in the way these self called Pharisee begin gossiping, I straighten up and heads high I play a bit with the black curls of my hair in a coquettish fashion.

There's nothing to be repentant now, nothing to be shamed off, I realize now. After that glorious day when I met him... Oh dear Lord! Images appear so vividly in my head. Those men dragged me to a corner in the main street while the multitude followed yelling improprieties to me! They didn't know me, neither my story, yet they all failed against me. Carrying stones in high they wanted me dead and so I believed I was... Until he arrived... Yeshua. He didn't know me either, but he stood there, blocking the air path of death between the raging crowd and me. And then he spoke with great eloquence. With his radiant present and his mellifluous voice, his message was so soothing yet powerful that made everyone retreat. Rock after rock dropped to the ground... like the tears rolling down my face. Erstwhile I felt alive.

I was told he was in town again. Now my dalliant spirits move me forwards. I wear my finest tunic and some jewelry. In my shaky hands I hold a jar of alabaster; the best one I could buy on the market... Only the best for him.

The grin curving up in my lips fades in the moment I cross the arched doorway. Everyone in the room look at me with bewilderment and disdain. Everyone but him. His eyes glisten with sincere joy and he smiles at me and everything, everyone around just vanishes in the background like a bur in the distance. At this moment my world crumbles down. It feels heavy, the burden I've been carrying for years but then it drops to the floor, with my whole self. I fall to my knees and crawl to where he's sitting. There's so much shame on me I can't face him, yet I know he's staring straight at me... I can feel it. Love.

Gently I remove the sandals off his feet. "No, please, Mary", he whispers placing his hand on my head's crown. My entire body shivers with delight to his touch. I manage to open with my trembling hands the lid of the bottle to then pour down slowly the perfume on his feet. This moment means a world to me. I finally have found the way to thank him, to show him how much I love him. My whole existence belongs to this man at this moment. My tears mix with the aromatic oil on his skin. I moan and cry of happiness and excitement while I rinse his feet with my hair.

It's Easter time

It's Easter time. For most Christians it's time to commemorate the time with Savior Jesus was crucified redeeming our sins with greatest sacrifice of all. However I use this time to do some research on the most popular tales in the Bible not in the spiritual sense of it, but from a historical and humanistic perspective. The Bible is a text and historical book filled with great characters, stories and epic moments. It's not only about faith or religion, it's the story of a civilization from its origins and the struggles the Hebrew people faced since the beginning of their times. Moving from slavery to building an empire.

So this is the challenge. Find one of those characters that you think is interesting and build a story, retell his or her story appealing to the human side, as any other story should be. (Don't preach unless you want to use it to set a moral. Remember not everyone is Christian here).

I'll be tagging some of my friends but everyone can do it. Try to keep it below 600 words. This one is 540 on the dot. It can be a poem. You're free to decline if you don't want to do this. You can tag others as well. Due date is next Easter Sunday. Add the #biblehistoricalchallenge to it in the tags so we can find you. If you want to add the cover I made just let me know.
