'Did you know the Queen speaks very highly of you?'

Good tactic, speaking of either David and I to him. Might make him slightly charitable. Maybe.

You see, the king is the third richest man in Belidona, much to the dismay of his wife, my father on the other hand is first. Harry's father had been first, had.

'I didn't,' I did.

'She does...very highly..'

We were nearing the castle and I was getting agitated... What if the other maids saw getting out of the carriage? They would surely talk.

'I'll get out here, please,' I said.

'No, I will see you to the Entrance Hall.'

Servants were not meant to use the main entrance. The few who did were punished severely. I started biting the nail of my thumb, a nervous habit.

I blurted out the question that was circling my mind since I had got into the carriage.

'Why now?'

The Duke frowned. 'Exuse me?'

'Why now? Why are you only introducing yourself to me now?'

'I never thought the time appropriate.'

'Why is it appropriate now?'

He sighed. 'You remind me of her.'

'Who?' I demanded.

'Your mother is as beautiful as you are, and you are every bit as stubborn.'

I blinked. no-one has ever complimented me that way before.                                                  But I am her daughter, we share the same light brown hair, mild cases of splatter grout (freckles), we were both of a swimmers build, broad shoulders and strong limbs.

'You have my eyes though,' he continues.

It was true. I had green while David had brown, like mother.

'But to answer your question, now is the time that you and David come of age. And as the family tradition states, the father of every child must choose a suitable job or life partner for them.' Oh-oh. 'I spoke to the Wall Keepers' Commander, and they have a space for David, if he should want it. I also spoke to the local blacksmith, and he was pleased to take him as an apprentice.' He paused.

Louder over each cobble stone we rolled over. I was having trouble concentrating...Until my name was spoken.

'As for you, Saoirse... I don't know, you show talent in sword fighting, but the Wall Keepers' don't allow women to fight for them. You can swim, but that would only get you a job in Terre Onas, and I don't fancy sending you away.' I wondered why. 'I'm to speak to Merideth this morning to see if she has any space for you, and I'm sure she does if she speaks that highly of you.' I groaned inwardly.
