Chapter Nineteen
Saoirse~
The cavern was big enough, it had enclosing walls and it resembled the one from my dreams. Paintings covered the walls of the cave. Gold and bones littered the floor. To the left ran a river. In the middle of the cave was a pedistal, on the ground beside it lay the two eggs.
One gold, one sapphire.
I inhaled sharply.
There they were. After so long.
I looked over at David and saw that he was looking in an entirely different direction.
I followed his gaze.
There, to the right, lay the great Dragon, Simmender.
'Oh Kings,' I cursed.
He was huge, much bigger then in the dreams. His large scaled bird wings were folded against side, his neck lay against the gold horde. His head rested on top of his foreleg, his claws pulled back, his eyelids dropping. His gold hide was torn at his side and the blood trickled out slowly. His ragged breathing echoed through the cavern as he spoke to us in our minds.
'Please take the eggs now, the one who did this to me years ago has begun to suspect where you are... You musn't return to Belidona, not until the dragons are borne and grown. Promise me you will be wise, never use my brethren for evil, bring peace to Athiosus! Stop the man that has done this to me and bring back the Dragon age...'
I hadn't noticed that tears were running down my face, I wanted so much to help but I knew that would never work.
I ran to Simmender and climbed the horde of gold he lay on.
His great big head moved and nudged me. I threw my hands around him and wept in despair.
His mind touched mine and showed me the happiness he had had in his long life. I noticed that they all included Belidona.
'It is my time,' he whispered in my mind 'Let me go and see Belidona again and let me re-enter the minds and hearts of people that have long since forgotten my name. Good luck Dragon Riders... I wish you all the wisdom that I and Belidona ever acquired. I wish you the best...'
David had climbed the horde and lay his hand on my shoulder.
Simmender had stopped breathing. The blood stopped running
I stood up straight and as a sort of blessing, I kissed his forehead and patted his long snout.
'May you find happiness once more when you meet Belidona Athiosus, great Dragon Rider of you, the magnificent Simmender, Guarder of the eggs. Good luck.' I said. I meant every word of it too.
Together, David and I climbed down the horde and made our way to the eggs.
All of a sudden someone barrelled their way through the door in a sort of blind panic.
'Run! Run! Run!' he screamed.
'William?'
'No time to explain! People coming after us!'
'What?' asked David.
'There-was-a-man-who-took-my-weapons-and-asked-me-questions-then-said-his-purpose-was-fulfilled-and-said-there-were-bad-people-coming-and-that-we-had-to-go-NOW!' he rushed while he ran towards us.
'Oh..' I said, blinking.
David was quicker then I and and ran to the eggs and picked up the sapphire one and wrapped it in clothes that were in his pack and placed it with care in the bag. I coppied his movements and took the gold egg.
My eyes widened, as did Williams and Davids.
We heard oncoming footfalls.
'They can pass with weapons,' I realized slowly.
'Time to go!' William said and grabbed my forearm and dragged me to the river, David in pursuit.
'On three,' said Will 'One, two-'
'STOP!' screamed a voice behind us.
An arrow whizzed passed my right ear.
I jumped into the river and pulled the boys in with me. Before we were swept away by the currents I saw a man and a bald woman walk through the door on the other side of the cavern. Surrounding them were pirates, each shooting arrows at us.
We submerged under the water and were swept away.
We pulled ourselves out onto the river bank, coughing and spluttering.
'Never...(cough)...again..(splutter)..' I managed.
'Agreed!' coughed Will.
An overwhelming feeling of gratitude over took me and I pulled myself up and bear hugged him.
'Thank you so much...' I whispered in his ear. I tried to pull away but his grip on me tightened as though to insist that I must stay with him for one more minute, and I did.
'You would do the same for me...' he whispered into my hair.
I looked up and saw a look in his eyes that I couldn't decipher.
'(cough)'
'Oh right!' I said and jumped a foot into the air.
I blushed the colour of red poppys.
'Where are the others, William?' asked David.
He bent over to his bag and pulled out a map.
'There,' he pointed out.
'We better get a move on then. We have a long way to go to get to the Enchanted wood of the Majikal.' David said and started walking ahead. Leaving me and William alone together.
