Chapter 4~ The Wall

I dreamt that night of the dragons.

No visions, just black. Not dark, light-less, and as I dreamt I thought this is how the dead saw the world...If they could see, I certainly couldn't.

A new voice spoke to me then...

Save the eggs, child, and only the eggs... Do not touch the treasure, do not take the treasure. And above all else do not try to save me.

The voice seemed older and wiser, and for some reason I felt at ease...as though I was having a conversation to Amy about the Bakers' good looking son.

Do not speak of your quest to anyone. I have been to the minds of four others that should accompany you.

Quest? Accompany me? I knew I was leaving in the morning with David.  And I was going to drag him out the wall if I had too.

 Prince William shall go.

Elizabeth Wate shall go.

Your eldest and twin shall go.

William? I was not marching into that castle saying a dragon had told me to bring him on a quest. Let alone asking Wate to come as well. Not after what I heard last night. I would bring Harry, that was evident. And David.

Swim the river to the boat

along the lonely path you face

a darkness that will not wane

Before that though

demons bite

a poisoned heart

splintered bones

Tethered to a promise broken

lies await a love that's gone

in the half a crack is born.

I awoke. I turned to see David packing an animal skin bag. He looked tired.

'I believe you.' he said wearily.

'Believe what?'

'Dragons... Bring the book with you. We might need it.'

After that I got up and packed my own bag. Three tunics', three breaches' a spare pair of socks, undergarments, a dress,  a spare pair of leather boots, bindings for a wound, a book of remedies and a bottle of rum. I studied the map for a while and decided that it would be safer to bind my chest and cut my hair then be caught by raiders.

Raiders are the worst kind of monster in Athiosus. Men who stole women from villages as their slaves.

That done, I put the book in my bag and went to ready my weapons. Only to be stopped by mother.

'What have you done to your hair!' she exclaimed 'And the wedding in three weeks!'

My eyes widened. A suitable job or life partner. Oh-oh... 'What wedding?' I asked in a small voice, hardly believing what she might say.
