Quince

Waiting for mom and dad to arrive at the dining room was the longest I had ever done. The food - delicious food, I might add - didn't help either and it's because of the guy who was sitting exactly across from my seat.

Aaron was acting like he didn't do anything. Why was he acting like that? He should be feeling uncomfortable! He kissed me... on my lips for crying out loud. He should be ashamed of himself and didn't bother getting here. But I guess, he was wearing too many imaginary helmets that he didn't feel any shame.

I sighed and took a sip of the water in front of me. Mom and dad were with the new neighbor, helping them with the furniture. Clock's ticking was too slow for my liking as well.

Aaron looked around. Actually, when he got in here, our eyes didn't even meet. He obviously avoided my gaze when I opened the door for him. But he was acting like the usual. I, on the other hand, was nervous.

"Ah, Aaron, I thought you're still at your house," I heard mom from the entrance of dining room. She kissed me on my head before adding, "Your dad and Mr. Brown are in here now as well."

"...I know. That is so cool." Dad entered the room, chuckling. "Take a seat."

Dad gave me a small pat on the shoulder before he took a seat. I turned to Mr. Brown and smiled at him. His looks seemed familiar.

"Sweetie, this is Johnny Brown. They just moved at the house next next door," dad said.

"Hello, Mr. Brown. I'm Carter," I introduced myself, smiling.

"Ah, such a fine lady," Mr. Brown commented which caused my cheek to turn bright red for a moment.

"And this guy over here, is Aaron. He's living next door. He's like a son to me," dad continued, giving Aaron a pat on the shoulder.

                 I snorted.

"What is it, sweetie?" mom asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

                 I just shrugged. "I'm hungry. Let's-"

"We're still waiting for Johnny's son," dad interjected.

I raised an eyebrow at him. "Son?"

"Yeah. He will be here any minute. Sorry if he's making you wait," Mr. Brown apologized.

I wanted to roll my eyes and say something but mom or dad wouldn't like it especially in front of a new neighbor and for sure, he would be dad's new friend and company in watching his favorite sport. So, I just shut my mouth and didn't say anything.

The doorbell rang just that moment. "Oh, that must be him," mom said cheerily, standing up to get the door.

"I am sorry for being late, Mrs. Young." That voice. I knew I had heard of it. Could it be...

I turned around and looked at the direction of the guy and my mom who was just entering the dining room. My eyes almost bulged out of its socket when I saw the same guy earlier. I think my jaw dropped on the floor that instant I saw his eyes. He was surprised to see me as well.

He smiled and said, "Wow. I didn't know you're their daughter."

"You know each other?" mom asked. "Take a seat, you two," she added.
