Mute and I snuck in behind a line of people shuffling into a restaurant full of families coming from the church where the wedding was held at. We only drove about ten minutes to get there, but somehow Mute found out that there was a wedding celebration.
He kept his arm linked around mine, occasionally leaning down to tell me to keep calm and act natural. Mute knows by now how bad my anxiety can get, he's witnessed it between my constant shaking and heavy breathing.
I pushed down my dress again to straighten out the edges, and readjusted the necklace my mom got me when I was younger. I forgot I've have it on until now, and feeling the cool, smooth metal brought peace to me.
"Okay, we're almost at the front. Just smile and act like we're supposed to be here. Are you able to do that for me?" Mute asked, holding onto my hand now.
I nodded and felt my stomach in knots. I've never been one to break the rules, I've always been the one who enforced them. You know, the person who would pull out a rule book and remind everyone of what they're not allowed to do. Crashing a wedding is whole new territory. Yet, as nervous and anxious as I am right now, I feel a rush of adrenaline which makes me feel like I can break any rule and get off the hook with it.
Mute and I stepped up to the entrance and stood in front of a man at the front door behind a podium. He gave us a smile and waved us up to the door.
"Hello sir, last name please," the man asked Mute with a smile.
Mute froze and panic ran across his face as he realized he had to speak. We didn't think this through. The poor man who we're lying to is dealing with an anxious girl and a mute boy, a mess of a combination.
As nervous as I felt, the adrenaline I've been feeling all night started to kick in when I realized I have nothing to loose. I pushed back Mute a bit and stepped forward to approach the man at the door.
"I'm sorry sir, my husband's deaf, he didn't hear what you said. Our last name is Huntley," I said, giving him a fake smile and causing Mute's eyes to go wide with shock.
Okay, it was a lie, but it's the only way I can get us in. If this man believes that we're a married couple then I'll be surprised, considering the fact that we both clearly look like teenagers. My last name wasn't a lie though, so I wasn't totally lying.
The man flipped through a few laminated pages in a binder and traced his finger down the rows, looking for our name.
"Ah, okay. Enjoy your time Mr. and Mrs. Huntley."
My eyes widened and my jaw dropped as I stared in shock at the man who just told me that my name was actually on that list. Before the man could question us anymore, I thanked him and pulled Mute into the restaurant.
"How did you do that?" Mute asked, leaning down to level with me.
"Oh, now you'll talk."
"Haley, I'm sorry. I forgot. I was feeling so confident that I thought I'd be able to talk. I guess I was wrong."
"Not much of a bad boy for someone who's afraid to talk to a stranger," I teased, walking towards a table in the back of the restaurant.
Mute pulled me by my hand and caused me loose my balance a bit. He caught me before I felt backwards and lifted me up in his arms. He carried me towards the middle of the dance floor and spun me around in circles, everyone staring at us from their tables.
"Mute, put me down!" I whispered angrily at him.
He smirked at me and began twirling me faster, causing me to feel dizzy from the fast movement. The bride and groom at the front of the dance floor looked at each other, asking whether or not they knew us.
