"Shane did this?!"
"S-Shane. A-and Benn."
He coughed once more before sitting himself up, leaning over slightly on my legs. I supported his back as he coughed again. Tears began to form in my eyes. I couldn't believe Shane would hurt him this badly. Joey began to rummage through his backpack quickly.
"What are looking for?" I asked, trying to help. He slapped my hand away slightly and kept looking. Eventually, he gave up, out of breathing and wheezing.
"Look for... My inhaler... Need it..."
I picked up his back pack and dumped everything out, an inhaler falling right on top. His shaking hands picked it up, placing it to his lips, and breathing in deeply. He did this a couple more times, his breathing slowly returning to normal. I patted him on the back, causing him to look up into my eyes. They were so green. Absolutely amazing...
Wait.
Stop that.
But... He looks so different. I actually kind of like it.
No, stop! He's a nerd! You can't like him!
He stood up slowly, picking up all of his things. It reminded me of this morning, so I leaned over to help him.
After all of his things were picked up, we walked over to the table where I had a bunch of fabrics laid out.
"Which one is good for an Orsino costume?" I asked, trying to change the subject before Joey could say anything.
He walked over to the white and crimson colored fabrics and put his hands on them.
"These," he whispered, smiling and running his hands over the fabrics.
I walked over to the green and yellow fabrics I had chosen for my outfit. I held them up towards Joey.
"What do you think?"
He smiled, looking at the fabrics, then at me, running his hands through his hair. His hair wasn't slicked back like usual, but it was messy, which was actually a good look for him.
"It looks good."
"Really? Because I thought of changing the yellow to a brown color, but I thought that would be a little cliche. So I chose a lighter color, a yellow."
I looked up to see him smirking at me. I realized that I was ranting.
"But you don't even care, so I'm gonna shut up."
He laughed quietly.
"I care. It was funny watching you rant though."
I noticed that his stutter was gone and his voice was a bit deeper.
"Where's your stutter? And your high toned voice?"
"Um, well, I usually only use it in school. I'm always nervous and scared during the day, so I'm usually a whole other person."
I smiled widely. This is a Joey I've never seen before.
"I don't even wear glasses if I'm out somewhere or at my house. Sometimes."
"The glasses are kinda cute."
Woah. What am I saying? Why did I say that? I'm such an idiot. Maybe he didn't hear me...
"Cute?"
Shit.
"Um, well, uh, yeah."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome. Do you wanna start, erm, sewing?"
"Yeah sure."
After stabbing himself with a needle multiple times, Joey finally got the hang of sewing. We sat there in silence as the machines hummed. I looked over at Joey every now and then, seeing him work really hard on the costume. After about an hour, we packed up everything and sat at the tables talking for a few minutes. Joey and I had a lot in common. Surprisingly... He especially liked to talk about the Hunger Games. He was a huge fan.
