Ch.13
I yawn and stretch when we reach another pit stop. Being cooped up in a car for two days is so irritating; we barely stopped since the diner yesterday. The only real rest we’ve had was when we stopped to sleep. My mind and body can’t take it anymore; the radio station keeps fuzzing in and out, my back is aching from sitting in the same position and I get the feeling like the space around me keeps getting smaller. I’m losing my damn mind!
“Are we close yet?” I whine as Zane fills the tank for the sixth time this trip.
“Yea, we’re in the town… about another half hour we should reach the coven.” He says while putting back the pump and closing the gas tank.
“Finally! I don’t think I can take much more driving.” I say while sitting back against the seat that I swear has an imprint of my ass on it.
Zane laughs and pulls away from yet another gas station. “I’m that bad of company?” he asks while laughing. I glare at him; I’m in no mood to joke right now. He takes the hint and throws a hand up in mock surrender, “My bad… I see someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.”
“I’m sorry.” I mumble. “I’m just tired of being in this car… my legs are so dead it wouldn’t surprise me if they fell off!”
“I want to show you something.” He says suddenly catching me off guard.
“Uh… ok? Is this something far?” I ask
“No, it’s just up this road. I promise your poor legs will get the exercise they need,” he laughs and smirks. I don’t reply to that remark as he turns off and then stops the car about halfway up a small dirt road.
I look around suspiciously and ask, “Is this the part when you murder me and throw my dead body into a canal?”
“You think I would go through all the trouble of hearing you bitch if I was just going to kill you?” he laughs.
“Good point.”
“Follow me.” He grabs my hand and starts leading me to a small path that reaches up onto a large yellowish-green hill. When we reach the top I’m stunned from the beauty.
The falling sun is settling behind a mountain, as the orange rays of dusk streak across a meadow of tall wild sunflowers. The large yellow orbs dance feverishly with the strong wind currents, causing a wondrous smell.
“Beautiful isn’t it?” Zane says from behind me. He rests his chin on my shoulder and wraps his arms around my waist; I suppress the light shiver that runs through my spine.
“It is… How did you find this place.” I ask, still peering into the picturesque setting as the sun drops further below the mountain.
“When my mother died I ran away. I didn’t get too far outside the coven seeing as I was only nine and had no sense of direction. I got as far as right up there…” he points off to the right and I see a large boulder protruding from the ground. “… I sat up there, hoping that my mom would show up; that it was all a lie. I saw a yellow glow from the field and I thought for sure it was her; I rushed down here as quickly as I could, but she wasn’t here…
