Ch.14

“I’m the highest in command here and everything you do is to be reported back to me. The Madame’s, which you’ll meet soon enough, are second in command here and you will refer to them if you have any problems. The young Scarlett’s are in training to become your next leaders so you will respect them and follow orders, are we clear?” Queen Terralease says with a cold glare in her eyes. I shake my head in response, my words are caught in my throat and I’m unable to speak.

“Any questions?” she asks and I shake my head no. I mean I understand the protocol here. Don’t have an opinion, don’t piss off the authority, and make sure you’re not seen or heard. Got it.

“Zane I do believe you have pack business to attend to.” She states sending Zane away with a wave of her hand. “I also have business that needs to be taken care of, so Kariline will give you a tour of the coven.” And with that she walks swiftly back up the stairs.

A young girl nods her head from a doorway that I haven’t noticed and walks over to me. She’s tall, lanky, and pale in comparison to the Queen but is still striking none the less. She has long black hair and bright blue eyes. Her mouth is more on the thick side and her nose is small to fit her features.

“Hi I’m Kariline, but call me Kari for short.” She holds out her hand and I take it reluctantly. “I’m Avery.” I respond.

“I think we’ll get along great.” She smiles brightly and starts to walk through the doorway she came from. I follow, because regardless my discomfort, I don’t want to stand here and look lost the whole evening.

“This is the kitchen. It’s not really used by the vampires but it’s still stocked weekly.” She says gesturing to the large space in front of me. Unlike my Aunt’s kitchen this one is huge! Granite counter tops along with stainless steel appliances. There’s a large island counter in the middle, making the room seem smaller than it is and the walls are painted a rich shade of purple. The floors are a reddish-purple tile cut into many different sized diamonds and the cabinets are the same dark mahogany.

I smile against my will because I know my Aunt would die for this kitchen. I miss her and her bubbly personality; I feel like I need that right now… for comfort. We continue walking and take a sharp left into a small room with men and woman sitting and lounging about. The room is small and a royal blue color is splashed on the walls. There are plush couches and chairs in various corners of the room and the carpet is a light tan. Very off putting from the other rooms in the house.

They’re human… that much I can tell right off the bat, but why they are here … I have no clue. I look towards Kari hoping her face would give away the answer, but she just smiles lightly and says, “They are the Bleeders. They service the Queen and the vampires as food.” Her face falls a little and her eyes are full of compassion for them it almost makes me wonder if she hates this life.

Maybe she’s just another girl thrown into this nightmare and see’s the wrong in all of this. “Are you a Bleeder?” I ask knowing the answer is no, but I didn’t want to flat out say ‘Hey what’s your role in this façade we’re in?’

“No I’m a Scarlett… being trained to be the next coordinator.” She sighs and looks away.

“Speaking of Scarlett’s, our training room is next so follow me.” She briefly takes a glance back at the Bleeders then turns and walks out of the door.
