Ch.4:
School took its usual toll, except I’ve been hounded all day by the local girl population, due to yesterday’s gossip. Endless questions such as, “How do you know Zane?” “Is Zane a good kisser?” and the most popular, “What does Zane’s abs feel like?” I mean come on; you would think I stared in a porn with him. That’s the bad thing about small towns; everybody and their mother either knows or assumes your business. Something like this wouldn’t even faze the people in New York… they would carry on their day without a small glance in your direction.
Midtown Creek is about an hour drive from school so I’m forced to entertain myself without the charismatic presence of my trusty side kick, I tried talking her into coming but she wasn’t having it. I even pulled the whole “What if he’s a murderer spiel!” but she wouldn’t budge. She just nodded as if I was being melodramatic and said “I wasn’t the one he asked to see.” Some friend huh !
Now I’m driving into what could be my last day alive and trying every excuse in my head to get me to turn my car around. But the pull of curiosity is too strong… I mean I just met the guy yesterday and then he asks me to meet up with him in private, I’m not sure what to think but I just have to know what this is all about and why it is so important I drive all the way out to Midtown Creek. The constant back and forth of my thoughts are driving me crazy and starting to give me a headache so I switch on the radio to get my mind off of the bizarre situation.
Ugh commercials … I go through the stations and settle on a familiar song and smile because it triggers a recent memory. I turn the knob that controls the volume all the way up and let the deep sultry sound of a man’s voice seep into my skin. Thinking of my Aunt Helena dancing in the kitchen yesterday brings out an involuntary giggle and I start to hum along.
Five maybe six seconds later I’m belting out the words loud and proud like I’m performing at some grand hall and moving my body oddly.
“Every storm runs, runs outta rain,
Just like every dark night turns into day,
Every heartache will fade away,
Just like every storm runs outta rain.”
I pause in the middle of my concert to check and make sure I’m still heading in the right direction. I pull over on the side of the road and pull out my phone… internet is a god send I swear! Good still going in the right direction… I begin driving again when an emergency broadcast interrupts a song and blares through my speakers. I wince at the loudness and quickly turn it down but loud enough to where I can still hear the warning.
“EMERGEMCY ALERT SYSTEM: NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUED A TORNADO WARNING …” Static fills the car and my pulse rises, please don’t say Tupelo… please. A shrill deep set mechanical feminine voice now begins to issue the rest of the alert and my brow begins to sweat.
“Citizens of West Point Mississippi, Oxford Mississippi, Starkville Mississippi, Southaven Mississippi, Tupelo Mississippi…” Shit! I stomp on my brakes and shift hastily to the corner of the highway once again… this can’t be happening! My phone starts ringing and I grab it instantly and flip it open to see a picture of my Aunt’s smile… fuck I’m forty five minutes away from town … she’s going to be so worried. I bring the phone up to my ear and force out a small mumbled hello.
