Ch. 9
“Wait you know the vampire’s that are taking me?” I say with my eyebrows still knit tightly together. How could she not of told me this sooner? Why would she keep something like this from me? How does she know about them in the first place?
She exhales deeply and Zane settles into the chair closest to me and grabs my hand. “Well hun it’s a very long story and I don’t know them personally, I know of them because your mother told me,” She says and takes a minute to continue, “I met your mother one night after work when I was waitressin’ for Black’s ol’ place on Ridge Drive. The rain was falling so thick that evening that the wipers on my car had a hard time keeping up,” She casts her eyes down towards the neglected cup of coffee and gulps for air. I feel Zane squeeze my hand lightly but I can’t peel my eyes away from her… as much as I would like to I’m too afraid I’ll miss something.
“I would’ve missed her walking along the highway if the rain hadn’t let up.” She says in an almost dazed tone, “But I saw her and when I did I couldn’t let her walk along the road, especially with her bulging baby belly. I felt so bad for her I had to stop and when I did,” she wipes away a falling tear, “oh your mother looked so sad and distraught, I offered to take her to wherever she was headin’ but she refused and said she didn’t have anywhere to go. I couldn’t let her stay out there with the rain so I took her here.” Her tears are falling rapidly now and she chokes on a sob. Still peering into the cup she continues.
“She was so grateful. She ended up staying a few months and took a liking to Daren. They fell deep in love, faster than I’d ever seen and he loved you from the moment you opened your pretty brown eyes.” She smiles to herself and shakes her head lightly. I know talking about her brother is hard for her; ever since my parents died she hasn’t really been able to talk about them.
“Anyways,” She straightens her shoulders and looks at me, “On your fifth birthday, your mother came to me. I’ve never asked about her past thinkin’ she might not want to talk about it, but on your fifth birthday she looked scared and I could tell she had been cryin’. She said to me that she had spotted someone she knew in the woodsy area behind the house, someone that wanted to take you. She then told me about what she was and why she left, oh what did she call it? Oh yea, The Coven; to keep you safe.”
“My memory is a little foggy but she said to me that she was a vampire and she made me promise that I would protect you from them. Whatever happened to them I was to keep you safe and protected.” She says now looking directly at Zane who is cowering slightly under her glare.
“But why are they after me?” I ask; all this new information looming around in my brain is consuming. My mother ran from them? But why? Zane told me they could help me but how so if my mother ran away from them to keep me safe?
“That she didn’t say and I didn’t press, I just made her the promise I intend to keep.” She says with an edge to her voice and I can tell it’s going to be a fight to leave. I don’t necessarily want to leave but I need to know more about myself, more about my mother, more about this other world I apparently came from. It’s bad enough I know for sure now that the man who raised me isn’t my father and I can’t help but wonder who is. Maybe my mother loved him too…
“Auntie, I need to go with Zane. I have to find out who and what I truly am. I know you made a promise to my mother but I need to do this for me.” I say looking at her crumbling face.
