Violet

Let me introduce myself.

I'm Violet. I'm thirteen.

I LOVE Taylor Swift. A lot.

I live in New York City, in a massive apartment across the street from the MindTravel lab.

The city has been empty for the longest time.

After MindTravel came out, the side effects caused everyone to go crazy, so they all left with no explanation of where they were going.

You see, my mother died recently. Right when MindTravel came out, she tried it. The wires got connected to her head wrong, and she was electrocuted to death.

I never met my dad. He left us when my mom got pregnant.

I spent a lot of time looking out the window of the huge apartment (the city was abandoned, why not live in a huge house?) at the empty street.

I knew Taylor still lived here. I just knew it.

I had seen her walking about before, but I never talked to her because she thought she was here alone. She thought everyone else left the city. She didn't know I was still here.

But this one particular day, as I was looking out the window on the 1st floor, I saw her walking. She was on the opposite end of the road, walking very slowly.

She was walking towards MindTravel.

I just couldn't let her go in there. The side effects were brainwashing people daily. I couldn't let that happen to her.

So I grabbed a penny out of my pocket that my mom had engraved for me on my 10th birthday. The engraving read: "ts forever + always"

I opened the window with the click of a button, and luckily, it didn't make a noise. Taylor kept waking straight ahead.

I brought my arm back and threw the penny as hard as I could out the window, then ducked down.

I raised my head just high enough to watch her reaction. She couldn't see me though.

She flinched towards the sound, then looked both ways to see where the coin had come from.

She cautiously walked towards the penny and picked it up, reading the tiny engraving.

I could see her faint smile.

Then, instead of coming my direction to see who had thrown it, she put it in her back pocket and kept walking.

She walked right into the MindTravel building and came out five hours later.

She had done a simulation.

I was screwed.
