Dreams We Never Had [Part 1] - Jean X Reader X Eren [Modern AU]

"Do you, (FN) (L/N), take Eren Jaeger to be your lawful wedded husband?"

"I do."

"Do you, Eren Jaeger, take (F/N) (L/N) to be your lawful wedded wife?"

"I do."

"Then I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Eren smiled at you lovingly, before sweeping you into a tender, caring kiss. When he pulled away, he winked at you, and you blushed as you smiled back at him, allowing him to take your hand and lead you back down the aisle as friends and family clapped. People moved to congratulate you both, and you found yourself being enveloped in hugs by your friends and family. Then Eren guided you to the elegant silver car waiting on the kerb for the bride and groom, ready to take you to the venue of your wedding reception.

You sighed happily as you climbed into the car. You could remember like it was yesterday the day four years ago when Eren had asked you to be his girlfriend. You also remembered clearly the day seven months ago, when he had knelt on one knee before you and presented you with a beautiful ring, and you had become his fiancée. And now you were finally married.

The friends and family of you and Eren were still smiling and waving at you from the pavement, and you waved back as the car engine started. This was a day you would always remember, you thought, and it would be remembered as one of the best days of your life.

But there was one person sitting in the audience who had not clapped, or moved to congratulate the two of you - a young man you had not seen in years. He was hovering at the back of the small crowd of people attending the wedding, and you blinked, frowning, wondering if your eyes were deceiving you. You had not invited him to the wedding for the simple reason that you had not maintained contact with each other. You stared at him in confusion as the car pulled away form the kerb and drove down the road, twisting your body in the seat to looking back at him as he melted into the shadows of the building behind him.

Jean.

His name triggered a series of memories whirling through your mind. Jean Kirschtein was your ex-boyfriend, and you hadn't spoken to him or even seen him for at least four years now. The two of you had dated for two years in high school, then broken up, then gotten back together later on and dated for another three years. You had once treasured hopes and dreams of marrying him and spending your future life with him, but those dreams were destroyed now, gone forever. Nearly a year after you had broken up with Jean for the second and final time, you had found a good partner, a kind lover, a gentle and loving soulmate, in Eren Jaeger. He was the one you now planned to spend your life with now, the one you loved with all your heart. He was your beloved boyfriend - no, fiancé...actually, husband, now.

But you still remembered the times you had spent with Jean Kirschtein. You had never forgotten him.

You laughed uncontrollably from where you lay on the sofa at Jean's house, trying to push Jean away from you as he tickled your ribs and stomach mercilessly. He grinned as you wriggled and squirmed under his touch, unable to keep from laughing too. Finally you managed to roll out from underneath him, and sprinted across the room, giggling in your triumph. He gave chase, and you ran all around his house with him following after you, until finally you ducked into his bedroom, hiding behind the bed. After a few moments, you heard the door open, and Jean entered the room, looking for you. His grin broadened when he saw you crouched on the floor behind the bed, and you stuck your tongue out at him before darting around him. or, trying to. He caught you as you went by, swinging you around and onto the bed, where he pinned you down by sitting on top of you with his legs straddling your waist.

You batted his hands away as he reached to tickle you again. "Stop it," you cried. "Don't you dare."

He just smirked at you, at you found your gaze glued to his mouth, staring at his lips. You had kissed those lips many times before, and you found yourself wishing he would kiss you now. You and Jean had been broken up for a while after dating, but you both still loved each other. You were good friends again, but you wanted more, and you could tell he did too. How could you have ever broken up? You were meant to be together, and the argument you'd had that had caused you to end the relationship seemed stupid and pointless now. You loved Jean, and he loved you.

You reached up to grip the collar of his shirt with one hand, pulling him down so your lips could meet. He moved, bracing his hands on either side of you as you kissed. When you parted, he smiled at you again. "You still love me," he murmured. "And I still love you. We always have loved each other, and we always will."

"We shouldn't have broken up, Jean. It was a mistake. We're soulmates, after all," was all you said before pulling him back to kiss him passionately again.

Huh. Soulmates. The very word you would use to describe you and Eren now. You thought of his words - we always have loved each other, and we always will - and realised that both of you had so firmly believed that, that it came as a shock to realise you didn't love him any more. Undoubtedly he didn't love you either - how could he still, after what had happened between you? But if that were true, then why was at your wedding?

You shook your head to clear your thoughts. Jean was your past, but Eren was your future, and you had to think about that now. It seemed wrong to reflect on the times you had with your old boyfriend when you were now in a relationship with someone else, and planned to spend forever with that someone. You gazed at your hand, twisting the gold band of your wedding ring around your finger. It would be a good, happy future, and Eren would make you a wonderful husband. That was all you wanted, and all you needed.

Jean was no longer a part of your life, and even if he had decided to show up to your wedding out of the blue after not speaking to you for years, then that was his choice. You didn't need him any more, and you doubted he needed you. But you did need Eren - he was your anchor to hold you in this huge world full of surprises and unpredictability. You loved him, and he had replaced Jean in your heart completely. You turned your head to smile at Eren - he smiled back at you with a gaze so full of love your heart swelled with happiness - and you reached for him, lacing your fingers with his and feeling content as you held the hand of your new husband.
