Dreams We Never Had [Part 2] - Jean X Reader X Eren [Modern AU]

The wedding reception went well. Everyone enjoyed the food, and after eating, a playlist of music that you and Eren had compiled together was put on. Some of the tables were moved so a mini dance floor was created, and several guests had no problems showing their moves in the middle of the room.

When a slower song came on, you danced with Eren, and afterwards you sat down at a table near the door, watching the guests who were dancing. Someone tapped you gently on the shoulder, and expecting it to be Eren, you answered, "Mm-hm?"

"Meet me outside in a minute," a voice that was not Eren's said. "Please, (F/N)."

Frowning, you turned around, but whoever had been behind you was gone. That was strange. For a moment you considered ignoring their request to meet them outside the room, but something made you curious as to what they wanted. You got up from your chair, hoping to slip outside for a minute without anyone noticing you were gone.

You were halfway to the door when a hand came to rest on your shoulder. "(F/N)?" This time it actually was Eren. "You okay?"

You turned to smile at him. "Yeah, fine. I just need to get away from the blaring music for a bit, it's starting to give me a headache," you said, which wasn't strictly untrue.

"Want me to come with you?" he offered.

You shook your head. "No, I'll be all right. The guests will definitely notice if both the bride and the groom disappear. Besides, I also need the toilet," you lied, feeling guilty for not telling him the truth. But something made you feel like Eren wouldn't be too happy if he knew you were meeting some stranger just outside the room.

"Okay, well don't be too long," he said, giving your hand a squeeze before heading off towards the food table and leaving you to dart out of the room.

You stood in the foyer of the building and looked around for the person who'd asked you to come out, but there didn't seem to be anyone around. Frowning you leaned against the wall. If he doesn't show up in two minutes-

"(F/N)."

You spun around to see a young man with light ash-brown hair, darker underneath. He was gazing at you with light brown eyes, and you took a step back in surprise. He didn't smile, but his eyes twinkled slightly at he looked at you.

"Jean," you breathed. Your eyes had clearly not been deceiving you when you thought you'd seen him earlier.

He paused. "You look beautiful, (F/N). Stunning, in fact."

"I...thank you," you said. "But what are you doing here?"

"I wanted to see you, but you moved house a while ago. When I heard about your wedding, I found out the venue so I could find you there." He shrugged. "What else is there to say? Although I'm assuming you're going to fire questions at me now."

You sighed. "You can't come out of the blue like this and expect me not to ask questions, Jean. We didn't keep in touch, I know, but that was your fault. You never answered my texts or calls. You avoided me like the plague. And now you show up to my wedding?"

"I dreamed of seeing you in a wedding gown," he admitted. "So many times I imagined it. But I always imagined you walking towards me at the end of the aisle...not him."

"Eren has nothing to do with this," you said. "Don't have a go at him."

"He has everything to do with this!" Jean cried. "He stole you from me, (F/N)! He took your heart from where it belonged. You loved me, and now you love him. How can I not be angry at him for that?" He looked away for a moment. "It breaks my heart to see you married to Eren."

"Then why did you come?" you demanded. "You can't mean that, anyway. You don't love me any more - you made that quite clear before."

He shook his head. "You're wrong," he said. "I do still love you, and I always have. Always will. But no matter how much it hurt, I had to see you again, (F/N). I couldn't bear to be away from you any longer. You don't realise how much I've been hurting all this time. I'm sorry for what happened between us, truly I am."

"You were hurting? Do you realise how much I was hurting? I cried for weeks on end after we broke up. I hated you for causing me so much pain, but I still loved you and that was why it hurt so much!" you cried, and he flinched. "But Eren helped me through it, and showed me that if I loved him he would not hurt me the way you did. It took me a long time to fully trust him and love him, but now I do, and I'm happy with him." Jean looked disappointed and you sighed. "What else do you expect me to say? You come here out of the blue claiming you love me still. Do you expect me to throw myself into your arms, declaring my undying love for you? Because it's far too late for that, Jean. This is my wedding day! You couldn't have picked a worse time to appear out of nowhere."

"So you don't love me any more," he said flatly. "You don't care about me in the way you said you were always going to."

You shook your head. "No, Jean, I don't love you any more. I can't. I have a life and a future with Eren now. Maybe I was never meant to have future with you, no matter how much I once dreamed of it. You ruined any hope of that future, and I saw that perhaps we weren't soulmates after all." You sighed, leaning back against the wall. "I'm sorry, but we weren't meant for each other. We dreamed of a future, but maybe we weren't meant to achieve that dream. It was a dream we never had, a dream we weren't destined to get."

"So that's it?" he asked. "We just...move on? Act like we never had anything good between us? Forget our dreams we once had for our lives together?"

"I thought that's what you were doing already for the past few years," you said. "I'm sure you can manage it. I've moved on, and I don't regret choosing to marry Eren. I think my future with him will be a happier one than I would have had with you. Our relationship only ended up causing pain to both of us, it seems. I'm sorry." And you turned away from him, walking back towards the wedding reception room, pulling open the door and not looking back as Jean as you disappeared inside, leaving him standing alone in the foyer.
