A raven-haired male was standing in the doorway of the mess hall. He was leaning against the door-frame, his arms folded over his chest as he casually surveyed the room before him. At least, that was what he was trying to make it seem like he was doing. In actual fact, he was looking around the room for one particular person, scanning each table until he found her.

There. You were sitting next to Eren Jaeger at one of the tables, talking animatedly to him. Across from you sat Armin and Mikasa, and further down the table were Jean and Marco. But none of them interested Captain Levi. He was only watching you.

He tensed as you laughed at something Eren had said. It wasn't fair that the Jaeger boy could make you laugh like that. Levi was supposed to make you laugh. His hands clenched into fists automatically, and he quickly relaxed them before anyone could notice. He wanted to stop you from talking to Eren, wanted to protect you from everything - but, he reminded himself, you didn't want his protection any more.

Levi remembered the anguish he'd felt after the break-up. Hanji had tried awkwardly to comfort him, and had told him that with time, the pain and unhappiness he felt would eventually go away. She's said that one day he would move on and forget you. But as time had passed, Levi had found her words to be untrue of his situation. The pain carried on, and he couldn't forget you at all. He remembered every day you'd spent together, every moment, every kiss. The memories hurt him but he couldn't push them away. Hanji doesn't know anything, he'd found himself thinking. No one knows what this is like for me.

Levi often wondered whether you remembered the times you'd had together as clearly as he did. Obviously you were having fun without him, and you didn't need him any more, but maybe deep down you felt hurt, just like he did.

He would push away this thought after only a short moment. He could tell that the break-up hadn't been anywhere near as hard on you as it had been on him. After all, you'd been the one to initiate it. You'd recovered in no time, and you had tried to be pleasant with Levi when you saw him around, but it hurt him too much to be near you. Every breath he took caused him pain when he was around you, so he had taken to ignoring you, watching you with regret and pain from a distance.

You knew that Levi was avoiding you, and ignoring you when you tried to speak to him. It hurt, and you watched him with sad eyes as he turned his back on you every time. You wanted to be friendly with him, but he didn't seem to care. He wanted nothing to do with you any more.

Levi had hoped that after some time everything would stop. That he wouldn't hurt so much. Every day he woke up hoping that something might have changed - that maybe he could talk to you with feeling like a hole was being drilled into his heart. But no. Every day he woke up the same, and every day he couldn't stop thinking about you.
