"So tell me about yourself." Rydel interrupts my thoughts. We are in my backyard on a swing bench. She doesn't know very much about me, does she?
Of course she doesn't, this is the third time you've been with each other. Second if you count talking
"Well.. My name is Ellington Lee Ratliff, I'm nineteen, my favorite color is green." I mention a few facts about me to her. Rydel nods slowly. I'm not pretty sure what I should say about myself.
I'm not the most interesting person.
We sit in silence, which doesn't feel awkward at all. I watch her fiddle with her fingers. "Where do you go to get away?" She asks suddenly surprising me. I look up at her and smile.
I know just the place to show her.
~
I park the car and get out. Rydel gets out of the car and looks at me confused. "You come here?" She indicates towards Jamie's Jams. I take her hand and feel that same weird feeling as I always do when I hold it.
We walk into the store and as usual, a song is playing. I quickly recognize the song as Paradise by Coldplay. I look over at Rydel whose also listening to it play.
I wonder if she's ever felt that way, the girl in the song.
Does Rydel think about running away? Does she dream about what her paradise is? I wonder if I'm-
No. I quickly dismiss the thought and pull her by the creaked old back door. She looks at me. "You come here a lot, don't you?" I shrug my shoulders and open the door showing a staircase. Rydel and I go up the stairs and I open another door, revealing the concrete rooftop.
Rydel lets go of my hand and walks around. The wind blows through her hair gracefully, leaving me in awe.
I walk over and sit on the ledge of the building. My green converse dangle below as I hit them along the wall as I sit. I look beside me to see Rydel taking a seat beside me along the ledge. "I can see why you like it here. You can see everything." She seems fascinated by the view. I chuckle softly and nod.
"The only person that knows I come up here is Jamie, and now you." I admit and she looks at me. I fought the tears threatening my eyes. "This is the place where nobody can hurt me, nobody can talk to me, nobody is telling me what to do with my life. Here is where I feel like my past doesn't matter. I'm a clean person." Rydel puts her head on my shoulder and reignites our hands.
"I know what you mean," Rydel sighs. "Everyone looks at me as if I'm a disaster waiting to happen. They think I'll break." I felt a tear fall on my hand. Rydel has tears running down her cheeks.
I turn towards her and she looks at me. I rub my thumb against her cheek and rest my forehead against hers. Her brown eyes shine into mine as I stare into them. "Rydel?" I whisper to her and she swallows.
"What?" Her voice cracks as she talks. God, I hate hearing her voice crack.
"We're all broken."
The words I say hang in the air for a moment, Rydel and I still in the same position. I notice she bites her lip which makes my heart pound a little. Her hands go up to my cheeks and she sighs bringing more tears down her face.
"E-Ellington," Rydel stutters and I nod slightly rubbing our foreheads together.
"You can tell me anything." I assure her and she starts crying still having her cold hands on my cheeks.
The next words I will never forget.
"Will you be broken with me?" She asks crying and I pull her into a hug and hold her tightly, nodding my head rapidly.
"Oh my god Rydel, of course I will. I haven't ran away and I'm not going to be running away anytime soon, okay?" I lift up her chin up for her eyes to meet mine. Rydel nods slowly and I smile weakly at her.
"Kiss me."
