Chapter 3 ~ Settling In
~*~
I sorted out the mess on the kitchen counter after helping Grandma Mo preparing dinner. I learned since day three of my stay here that if you are late for dinner Grandma Mo would flip on you. Unfortunately I learned it the hard way as I was late on my second day of stay here by five minutes and got scolded for hours.
She guides me to Grandpa Pete’s study room and told me that family dinner is important. Unconsciously I smile and felt a tear creep down my cheek, it was the same thing my dad always tell me. Grandma Mo panic when she realise I was crying, she lend me her shoulder without asking any question which I was grateful for.
“Jillian can you please prepare the table.” Grandma Mo said as she pulled a baking tray out of the oven, her own homemade vanilla sponge cake.
“Okay.” I opened the cupboard where Grandma Mo always puts the plates in and began taking out the right amount of plates for everyone before closing the cupboard. I froze in my spot as the memory overcomes me. The memory of where I would always try help mum and dad to prepare the table.
“Sweetie? Are you alright?” she place her gentle hand on top of my shoulder and felt myself trembles under her touch. Tears began to fell down my cheeks and felt my head being brought down to her shoulder. “It’s alright my dear, everything is alright.”
I nod my head against her shoulder and smile even though she can’t see it. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what came over me.” I said before pulling away and rub the tears away with the back of my hand. I grin at her and let out small chuckles before heading to the dining hall.
I smiled feeling love once again since after the funeral. The first relative that took me in was my mother’s older brother and her wife. They were nice enough to me for the first couple of weeks until I got into trouble by helping someone they can’t see. The police brought me home the same night I skived school by getting in a fight. To save their reputation they send me to my next relative, my mother’s older sister with the excuse that they can’t take care of me because they’re too busy with work and have three children to take care of.
Aunt Kelly was a nice woman, she is the middle child and older daughter. Unfortunately she’s a business woman who travelled a lot, leaving me alone in her flat, I was fine with it though to be honest. When she’s not away and at home we would have a laugh and I would help her out at much as possible. She was a nice and caring woman who actually glad to take care of me even though I keep getting in trouble.
Aunt Kelly would always greet me with a smile and a slight disappointment in her eyes after a phone call from the headmaster or being brought home by the police but she always thought it was because I was having a hard time copping and adjusting to my new life.
I enjoyed staying with her even though I rarely see her. Out of my mother’s family Aunt Kelly was the only one who truly cared for me but not all things always end up in happy endings as I was taken away from her after a nosy neighbour reported Aunt Kelly as neglected guardian and the social service which mother’s other relative had to fight custody for me for their own reputation.
She was the only one who I really get along with and staying with her for a year and half was the best time that happened to me after the accident. Unfortunately not everything always ends up as happy endings.
I look up the ceiling hoping to fight the tears that was about to fall down from my eyes and blink several times.
“Yo baby!” Danny said as he entered the dinning hall making me look at him in surprise. His usual baggy clothes hanging loosely on him moves in harmony with every move he took. “What’s for dinner?” He put his arm around my shoulder like it was something natural to do.
