"Is that really what happened Grandpa Troye?"
"Yes Sagey baby that's what happened."
My twelve year old granddaughter curled up beside me and I rested a fickle arm against her.
"What-what happened next Grandpa Troye?"
"Well Sagey, I was in a deep depression for awhile, I couldn't seem to find a purpose with my life. I was malnourished and probably the closest to death I had ever been."
Her blonde head perked up and eyes glazed with curiosity, she looked to me for further explanation.
"I began singing on the streets with a cardboard box in front of me for money. That's when Dani came across me in an unhealthy state. She took me in and signed me to her record label. I began a career of success writing and performing songs, going on tours and attesting big events even. But I never found it within me to love someone else. After focusing on my music, I never went back to either of those small towns."
"I'm sorry Grandpa."
Sagey looked at me with more pity than I had seen from both my niece and nephew when I attempted to tell them the story.
"Grandpa Troye?"
"Mmhm?"
"Will I ever find my own boy to call Emerald?"
Tears began prickling my eyes but her determination was what held me together.
"Yes sweetheart, you'll one day meet a boy- or girl that you'll find so immensely interesting and you'll be enraptured by their every move. Then one day you will speak to them and from that moment forward nothing will be the same. Whether it is good or bad isn't the question, it's if they're here to stay or not."
Sagey looked less than pleased with the answer but I didn't find it within myself to continue. Reminiscing over Connor was more than hard itself.
"Sagey! Come help with dinner!"
My niece in law Karen shouted to the young girl and I didn't miss the threatening look she shot toward me.
"Mommy! But Grandpa Troye was telling me a story about a boy he called Emerald-"
She leaned down and spoke with a low tone.
"Nonsense Sagey, remember that Grandpa Troye is very sick and tends to talk about made up scenarios sometimes."
Sagey looked over to me with the last look of belief I would receive.
