It was a small ceremony. And by small, I mean tiny, minuscule, minute.
Scarlett stood in a mid length black dress which buttoned up to the top of her chest. Her hair tied into an effortless half up half down style.
She was stood by Freya, Niklaus and Marcel. Her small, black heels allowing her more height, but she was not yet taller than any of them.
Niklaus and Marcel had placed Elijah's open coffin on a stone table just for everybody to say their final goodbyes. Alone.
So as one went in, the others stepped out. Scarlett, volunteering to be the last one to go in, she hoped that in the small moment before she finally come to terms with everything and said goodbye, a miracle would happen.
Freya went next, coming out with Mascara smudged down her cheeks "I vowed I would return him to the living" she said
"I made the same promise" Scarlett replied, not wanting to disclose her failure. "Somehow I don't think I could ever follow through"
She stepped away from Freya, ensuring that Marcel had his quick goodbye, before she stepped in.
Candles flickered all around the table, all the light from outside was blocked so they provided a dim light.
"Oh Elijah" she said quietly, in a tone as if to say oh Elijah, what have you gone and done! "I shouldn't have gotten you into this mess"
"I'd suppose you'd say the same to me, though. And maybe you're right, maybe you shouldn't have gotten me into this mess, maybe you shouldn't have let m fall so head over heels in love with you, and for that, I am so mad at you" she sat down on the edge of the stone table, taking his cold hand in hers as an attempt to try and warm it up "I'm mad because you left me too, you were the one that didn't give up on me, you helped me and because of my stupid fault, you're gone. You've left, I hate myself for it, and I'm trying not to hate you too"
Her thumb slowly stroked his hand, she wished so hard to just feel movement, or a bit of warmth, a sign that he's alive. A sign that he is with her.
"The only reason I went on that stupid date with Alex was to hopefully get to know you, it's my fault that I developed feelings for him, I should have gotten out while I can" she said "but then I wouldn't have had you, I wouldn't have made such good friends in Freya, and now, surprisingly Niklaus, I wouldn't have had this opportunity at another life, I wouldn't have been able to see, hear, smell, feel and run better than I used to; and for that Elijah, I am honestly and truly grateful"
Scarlett raised a blood red rose up to her chest, breathing in and smelling it, before placing it on Elijah's chest "I got Freya to charm this for me" she said, "you see, my world is full of magic thanks to you, I know witches and wolves and vampires. But this rose, it's charmed so it will never die, and when you come back-if you come back, you can keep it in Case I'm no longer there"
She stood up, wiping away her tears "I have one of my own, though it's falling apart and dying, if you ever come back to life, so will it" she explained "but I truly think this is going to be goodbye, Elijah. Because I can't deal with this pain anymore. I don't want to, I don't want to live. It hurts to breathe, blink, speak or think, and I don't want to do any of them"
She shut her eyes and looked down, allowing more tears to flow "I don't want to wait until you come back, I want to here, now. But I also don't want to do anything permanent, so I am going to shut them off, all of them. I don't want to have this sort of pain anymore"
She wanted to hear his voice, she wanted him to tell he not to be so stupid and compulsive. But when she shut her eyes again to re think everything, no sound was made.
Her hand touched his once more, everything that she felt when she touched him, the liveliness, the happiness, had all gone, just leaving a shell of a man.
Scarlett closed the lid on the coffin, being the last one to say goodbye, she had the job of shutting the coffin. "Goodbye, Elijah" she whispered through her quivering lips, the light that he gave out lowered as the coffin lid closed.
Her fingers ran over the smooth, glossed ebony as she sniffed, taking it the last moments of this pain, feeling everything.
Scarlett took the back entrance from th tomb, New Orleans graveyards were a maze of bodies and tombs, coming out of the other way would allow her to sneak away undetected.
The next time the Mikaelson's would see her, she'd be different.
