Chapter 37: Wind Power
When I was clean again, I packed up all my stuff and left the hotel. I couldn't risk staying there any longer. I had to keep moving. I knew that Cyra could come any day now, but I had looked at the map of the area and there were a few towns nearby that I could easily stay at for another few days. Hopefully Cyra would still be able to find me.
There was still no sign of the Elvirans that attacked me. But I hadn't seen any sign of Cyra either.
I caught a bus travelling to the next town, a place called Katikati. It took 45 minutes to get there. It would have been faster flying, and I didn't like buses, but I was scared that they would find me. It gave me time to gather my thoughts at least.
I booked into a motel in Katikati for the night. I was exhausted by the time I arrived. The Moon was not yet up and I felt physically and mentally exhausted. I climbed under the covers on the bed and fell into fitful sleep.
I kept seeing the fight on repeat, feeling my body tossed to the ground, the helplessness, the fear.
I woke up in a cold sweat. It was late into the night by now. I didn't know how long I had slept for, but I still didn't feel very refreshed. I threw open the window, trying to suck in as much fresh air as possible. I felt sick.
I had been so content for the past fortnight... and now this. Running again. When would it end? A cycle that seemed to be on repeat.
I sat back down on my bed and rubbed my face. Part of me wanted to go back to sleep, but I was too awake now.
I looked at my hands, and thought of the wind in the forest. Our abilities were what set us apart from the other Elvirans. I thought back to what I had been told about the different abilities of Lunairs. There was one that encompassed wind, I was sure. I remember seeing the symbol. What was it again? I remember when Cyra had gone through all of them with me. But what had she said...?
"The Naturals, represented by the wind, keep the balance of nature. They were gifted with the power over the earth and the weather."
That was it. A Natural. I didn't know much about them. I knew that Cyra was a healer, so that didn't help me. 'Power over the earth and the weather'. That explained the storm yesterday.
I wanted to practice, to see what I could do, but I didn't think it would be wise to do it inside the motel room.
From what I had seen, Katikati was surrounded by farmland. I had slept in my clothes so I just put my jacket over the top and headed out the door.

I stood in a paddock. Open land spread out in every direction. It was pitch black. I couldn't see any houses or lights, except for the sprinkling of stars from above, and the Moon which sat clearly in the sky, unobscured by clouds for once.
I breathed in.
The air was so fresh and clean.
Having lived in the Omega compound for so long, I still couldn't get enough of the night air.
I closed my eyes. I could feel the air around me, so close. I put my hands out, the breeze running over them. The air was everywhere, the wind running past at any moment. I just needed to harness it, work with it, use what was already there.
As I stood there, all my senses were alert, in a way they had never been before. It was like I had finally woken up.
My eyes snapped open. I knew what I was meant to do. I didn't know how I knew, but it was already a part of me.
The wind was easy. I could already feel it collecting around me, like it knew, like it was just another piece of myself.
It swirled around me, wrapping around my hands and through my fingers.
I raised my arms and as I shifted them in a certain direction, I could feel the wind as it raced to answer my request. Even without seeing it, I could feel where it was, where it had gone. This was like nothing I had ever experienced before. This was so much a part of me that I couldn't believe I hadn't recognised it before.
I decided to aim for a target. A tree that stood on the verge of the farmland, one in a line of trees creating a barrier from one piece of land to the next.
How strong was I? How strong could I be?
I collected the wind back around me. I could feel it building, impatient. It wanted to run again.
I pushed my hands towards the tree, feeling the energy of the wind channel through me and towards it. It blasted forth, knocking into the tree, and toppling it over as if it were nothing. I dropped my hands and the wind dispersed. Everything was untouched, except the one tree that now lay fallen, broken.
Woah. It was as if it knew exactly what I wanted.
I looked up at the sky. It was so clear, not a cloud in sight. I had manipulated the sky last time, hadn't I? Could I do it again?
I closed my eyes. I could do it; I was sure of it. I reached my hands into the sky.
I pictured the gathering of clouds, the joining together of the water molecules, the way it felt to fly through them on an overcast day. I pictured them moving towards me, covering the sky above me.
I felt light rain on my head and hands.
I opened my eyes.
The clouds were there, right above me. Called on command.
I willed them away and they parted before my eyes, revealing the starlit sky once again.
I laughed.
I almost couldn't believe it. I could control the weather. It was surreal. The possibilities were endless.
